Just wondering because I am since 2000 and I always like talking to African Americans about how they are coping.

runs deep in my family...im borderline....take medication for "preventative" measures doctor says...the only thing I like about it is that it aids in the weight loss process :D...my mom and grandma have it and my great grandma died from it....im just trying to break the cycle

My parents have it, some aunts & uncles. I sure hate this thing hit my daughter, but she is handling it pretty well. Won't eat right most of the time, but she keeps her blood sugar down where it should be and she takes her medication. She is too lazy to exercise.

Oh yeah. I have diabetes type 2 also. I have been doing pretty well with it. Both of my parents have it...and my sibilings do not.

Mine is doing okay. Had it since 99 myself. I am on meds though. The following meds daily:

glucophage
Avandia
Zocor
A blood pressure med that I take for my kidneys, my blood pressure is fine.

It runs on my Father and Mothers side of the family. I probably wouldn't have had it if I had not blown up after my husband died eating and grieving. Right now yes I am slightly overweight, based on the Anglo charts - but only by about 15 pounds. But losing the 60 didn't make the diabetes go away. I also had Gestational when I was pregnant. I watched that with diet and only gained 18 pounds on a 'normal' frame with her.

I don't spend anytime trying to figure out how I got it - now I'm about making sure it doesn't take me out.

I watch my carbs it works for me. I should exercise more but I don't. I haven't had any problems in awhile because my body will tell me IMMEDIATELY if I have been fucking up. It seems that the thing for me is to stay hydrated. If I slack on the fluids I get all kinds of shit.

I currently am running 5.7 on my Aic's which is damn good. I am still working on my cholesterol, but I lead a pretty normal life.

I was looking in this book and saw that Barcadi was touting Diet Coke and Rum UHHHH I been drinking that forever, lol I'm gonna get my liquor in, lol

I just live life. If I overdo it - then I will go take a walk or walk around my office building to kinda move it along.

I think sometimes dealing with the mental aspects is harder. Everytime I see someone die from it that is famous or whatnot - I get scared because for most of us we know we are going to die but you know we don't have all the particulars, but I feel like with this Diabetes I have the particulars, just don't know when. It's scary.

Wow Pam,

You are doing well with living with your Diabetes. One of my close friends just learned that she has Diabetes and she is taking meds...and I guess that she is also taking meds for her high blood pressure. When she had her 2nd child, she had gestational diabetes. I remember telling her that when women have gestational diabetes, they have a higher likelyhood of developing diabetes type 2 in the future. Well, it happened and she is taking pretty well.

I am proably about 15-20 lbs overweight and I know that loosing that weight would help. But it seems to me that keeping my "Bad" carbs down is helping. My blood/glucose levels seem to be pretty low these days. But I do need to exercise more.

That's great news Zuri. Now don't think I don't have slip ups because I do, lol believe you me. Mac and Cheese is like sex, lol and a few other carbs are as well, lol If it wasn't for the fact That I love chicken to the degree that I do and can just eat it with nothing else. I would be in bad shape, lol

I do better when I am just working and coming home, lol if I am out etc. I might do my thang, lol but again a hot wing ain't never killed nobody, ROTFL

I have a great team of Drs. on an HMO no less. they get on me - from my eye Dr. (who really cussed me out about the whole inflamed corneas) to my General Practioner who specializes in Diabetics and I am one of his youngest patients (at 37!) so he stays on me and will call me if I go past the 3 month mark to see him.

I am going to take a picture of all my medicine bottles from last year. Let people see because it ain't nothing to joke about and I kept them all.

I remember when I had to tell my then SO about it and I was so scared he would perceive me as being sickly and he told me

"Baby so what if we end up having to get you a kick stand, I'll love yah anyway" I kinda carry that around as my charge to battle, lol lol
