What brand of relaxer do you use?
Is it lye or no lye?
What has been your experience (good, bad or indifferent)?
Any hair breakage?
Do you apply it yourself or get it done professionally?

I use Motion, it does have lye in it. I usually do my own relaxer.
I haven't been to the hairdresser on ten year unless it was for braids.

i use motions as well...sometimes i will use dark and lovely....both with lye.
i dont have any complaints..unless my hair is having some severe breakage...and then it can be rather gross...the flyaways.
and i usually do it myself.

Is the lye motions the one that says no base?
How are you preventing overlapping?

I thought all of them had lye just different kinds depend upon whether it's a mix or no-mix variety.

i have evolved from precise (first used at hairdresser, then used at home - 10 years use), to motion (first used at hairdresser, then used at home - 2years use), to design (first used at hairdresser, recently used feb 2003). no complaints. i just realized my hair is still bushy no matter what i do to it  so the perm just make it manage-able, not "relax" or lie flat, in my mind...
overlapping prevention was done by moms
i notice some hair dressers will overlap no matter what.

Lye ~ Sodium Hydroxide
No Lye ~ Guanadine Hydroxide (calcium hydroxide + guanadine carbonate)
I always thought that most at home relaxers were no lye.

i think they know. i assume they don't want to take the time and skill to do it correctly. it easier to slap it on, come through to the ends and wash. another thing i thought was perhaps when they do the combing (straightening?), the comb get's caught in a nap or built up hair that is naturally falling out when its combing and instead of stopping at the new growth, they may think it won't get straight unless it is completely combed through... mind you it all can be washed out, naps and all with those comb/brushes they use.

...have lye, it's just the chemical make up of the lye...one is more natural, one is more synthetic...if you take proper care of your hair, there shouldn't be a lot of breakage, unless you are a "stresser" or have medical issues...DO NOT allow yourself or your hair dresser to "overlap" when "touching up" the 'do...it isn't good for the tresses AT ALL!
