View Full Version : How much is too much?

Since I'm in between jobs and feeling way too stressed, I've started working out twice a day (minimum). Hoping this will help me focus and sleep better - tired of waking up at 2:30 am and just laying there...
So here's what I've started doing:
Hit the gym for 1 hour cardio in the morning after I drop my son off
Ab work/push ups at the house
Hit the gym again for weights in the afternoon before I pick my son up (alternating upper and lower body)
Ab/push ups again at night
Plus I have a couple of friends that I go walking with in the evenings but that can vary...
Is it possible to work out too much? Any tips?

Yes it's possible to work out too much.
Let's see here, make sure you are stretching afterwards.
Consuming some form of protein after exercising about 30mins -1hr afterwards so the muscles can repair itself.
From what I understand you should allow your muscles to rest at least 2 days before training them again. Doing it frequently can cause you to overtrain and pull the muscle.
How are you feeling after the workouts? Are you sore for long periods of time?
Just listen to your body and it will let you know if you are going too far.

thanks for reminding me about stretching, Myst. That's one thing I've always be bad about doing. I did have some protein when I got home (after the ab work).
I was gonna do upper and lower body (weights) on alternate days. But then that only allows one day on between. I'll take your advice and see how I feel...Not sore yet but this is a new regimen so we'll see...

And you know this, cuz! But I gotta have some kinda stress relief :D so the gym will have to do. Plus it'll really be off the hook when I do get a piece again - see I'll have more stamina, endurance, strong-ass thighs...yeah, yeah...dammit, Hula, trying to keep my mind offa that!:hammer

don;t have much to add to what Myst said. Thats good that you are using excersise as opposed to other things like "empty" sex, overeating, drinking or whatever to relieve stress.. Like Myst said, just listen to your body.

Sounds like a pretty good plan.
I used to break up my workout routines the same way when I worked closer to home.
I liked it because even if you didn't get in all of the workout. . .at least you did something.
Now, I generally try to walk the stairs a few times a week and I tend to spend most of my lunch hour walking at an accelerated pace around downtown. I also do ab work & pushups while at home and incorporate in light weight. That allows me to just hit the gym for the treadmill, stepper, etc. and leg, back and heavier free weights.
Good luck.

thanks for the support! I'm having a quick refresher with a trainer tomorrow afternoon. Since I don't do much upper body work - just pushups and light free weights at home, I need a bit of help with designing an upper body routine that will give me the results I need.
I think I'll sleep good tonight - did lower body work this afternoon (I stretched, Myst!) and I feel it...
When I do start working again, I'll be sure to take the stairs and walk on my lunch break - that's a great idea, Bright. I have to do ab work at home - I hate doing that in the gym...
You're right Meelah, it is better than "empty" sex cuz there's no drama attached!

dammit, I thought you wouldn't notice!
but now that I'm working, I have to switch up...now I'm gonna be doing strength training at lunch (alternating upper and lower) and cardio/abs every day. Plus my son is trying to get ready for basketball so he wants me to run suicides with him in the evening...
hey, can you do pushups everyday or do I need to alternate that, too?

Isn't that where you run up so far and touch the ground, run back to the starting point and touch the ground. . .run back up a little further and touch the ground, run back to the starting point and touch the ground.
