The Tale of De La Hoya-Trinidad
Felix Trinidad W 12 Oscar De La Hoya
September 18, 1999
It was boldly billed as "The Fight of the Millenium." Oscar De La Hoya, boxing's Golden Boy and its leading gate attraction, faced the toughest opponent of his career when he entered the ring against Puerto Rico's favorite son, Felix Trinidad. The showdown between these two undefeated welterweight fighters in their prime sparked pre-fight comparisons to the classic 1981 showdown between "Sugar" Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns.
De La Hoya dominated the fight early, giving Trinidad what he would later call "a boxing lesson." But in the late rounds, De La Hoya, thinking he had won enough early rounds, went into cruise control. It was a major miscalculation as the judges awarded Trinidad the final rounds -- and a controversial decision. Trinidad returned to Puerto Rico and was greeted with a hero's welcome.
LEGENDARY NIGHTS: The Tale of De La Hoya-Trinidad will air on Wed., May 14th at 10:00pm ET/PT only on HBO.
