to let someone trim my ends. I haven't had my hair professionally trimmed in about 3yrs for fear that they will cut too much.
How do you find a non scissor happy stylist?

I would imagine someone who specializes in natural hair wouldn't be as prone to cutting it as much as someone who didn't.
You have to keep in my that it's also easier for someone else to assess the true condition of our hair than it is for a lot of us looking at it with an "untrained eye".

If it's more than three inches I don't want it all cut at the same time. Can you tell them that?
I also have this fear that they will try to cut it all even (my hair has been in layers for the past 11yrs)

I was just going to mention that. . .most tend to try to make your hair even all over talking about something or the other. . .I forget the rhetoric.
My belief is that you should treat each strand or section individually. If I don't care about my hair being 12 different lengths then why the hell should you.
I think another thing they do is try to cut all the damage off instead of running the risk of it continuing splitting the shaft.
I suppose you could always go somewhere for a free consultation and see what they say and then base your decision on that.

I have no problem cutting it where it is split at, usually I'll cut about 1/4 inch above the split end.
But if the person is not looking closely and is just trying to cut across they would probably take off more length then need be.
I had one lady who was perfect, but she does relaxed hair.
I guess I'll just ask around.

if she cuts off too much...will it grow back?

Surely, but do I want to go from 22' to 10'...No
I have a goal that I'm trying to obtain, don't want or need any setbacks.
I would like to get it pressed also, but am afraid that they'll burn my hair.
Professionals were giving me super relaxers for years (when that was waaayyyyy too strong for my scalp), overprocessing my hair and cutting more than need be, so I'm wary.

You want my sisters number?? She is a natural stylist in Richmond. Don't know how far that is from you

Yeah, I would consider that far cause I would not have a ride. But hmmm I may be able to find one.
Yeah PM me her number
I want some professional twists done too, cause I cannot ever get mine to stay.
Does she do press n curls too? Or just all natural styles?

...my advice would be to get the split ends cut off before more damage is done...i doubt seriously if you have more than 3 inches of split ends...plus, if you don't want more than 3 inches cut off, tell the stylist that you only want 3 inches cut off...if they cut off more, don't pay! your hair will grow back, and hopefully it will be healthy!!

I'm pretty sure that I don't have more than 3 inches of split ends either. Actually I probably have less than an inch of split ends. I've maintained it quite well over the past few years, and trim regularly myself.
My main thing is not so much holding on to split ends as it is being afraid that someone will needlessly fuck up my hair.
You ever hear of people fucking up your shit just because they can?
LOL
That's my fear.
See I've never been vocal when it comes to my hair. I sit there quiet as a mouse "oh whatever you want to do is fine" and cringe in my seat. Slowly but surely I'm getting out of that. I will not let someone bring scissors to my hair ever again before being clear on what I want.
Yes it will grow back, hell it's hair. But the issue ain't about growing hair now is it? Healthy? It's more than healthy now. If there's one thing I know how to do it's grow some healthy hair (i've had tons of practice at that), I'm like the Queen of hair disasters :p
One day, someday, I'll get it done professionally. I'll just keep doing it myself until then.

...if it's fear you have, i'd go around to quite a few stylists and get their take on clipping ends, or just go in and check out their style...you will be able to tell if a customer is REALLY happy with their hair or not....and i HATE to say this, but some white salons will clip your hair and you won't have to worry about them fucking it up, but they are USUALLY in high end salons...there used to be a white girl here at a salon, who could perm, clip, braid, whatever you wanted, but she moved...she was one of the TIGHTEST stylists in this city...

And I HATE to say this, but those white Salons usually have thier appoinment books in order, they know how to manage thier time, they do not overbook, and they are professional all together. This something that the brothas and sistahs can learn from them , if we don't this will be another way that they can take money from our pockets. I have seen a couple of cases like this already. There is a Korean shop in San Diego that does nothing but black hair. She started out doing weaves in the beauty supply shop and I have heard now that she has expanded into a full shop.

The one stylists I was most happiest with and went to for years was White. . .I thought she was mixed until one of my friends who went to high school told me. . .I was like  it figures after all this time, trial & error. . .I'd be getting my hair done by a white girl.
But to SwtJ's point and Myst's fear. . .I realized this woman didn't have anything to gain or lose from fucking up my head. . .All/some/most sista stylists would or can be like this. . . .especially if they specialize in weaves, frying and dying hair. . .those are the absolute worst to even think about going to.
I even had to get into a "long-distance tiff" last summer with one down in Miami over my daughter's hair. Her grandmother called me at work and was relaying what the stylist was saying/advising about my daughter's hair. . .I asked her to please put Ms. Stylist on the phone so we could have a clear understanding.
And then my one of daughter's aunt is a ghetto-fab hairstylist  that woman had the nerve to make some crazy azz double-ponytail style on my daughter with about 2 lbs of weave :beating. Luckily, two of her other younger and more sensible aunts recognized it as a "Crazy Shae Creation" and took that mess out her head pronto.
I'm going to find a picture of the style and post it, ya'll won't believe the atrocity.

I've been lucky with the stylist I have had except for one. She took my hair out in the back. I had to get it cut to even it out and I got a curl so it would grow back. I looked like a damned boy.
My grandma used to do my hair when I was young. Then I started going to Renita and I loved her. She was so good that I could sit down in her chair and tell her to cut it off, any style she wanted and I would be looking good when I got up. One client couldn't believe I told her that and stayed for my whole appt. just to see what my head would look like when she was done.
Went to one lady named Jean. She used too much spritz. Had your hair all hard. I had to stop going to her. Went to another Jean and she kept my hair nice & healthy and my daughters too. Then I moved to Texas and had to search for a stylist. I went to one twice, then I landed in the capable hands of Debra and I am still with her. She doesn't get cut happy unless I tell her too.:)

Dang, why they put all that weave in the baby's head?
Why does that lady look familiar?
Interesting suggestion about the white folks, but I'm kind of particular about that. Black people only.
