But the first that I saw in the theaters was actually a documentary when in Jr High, round about '72 or '73:
WATTSTAX

What did I know as a young head? This movie blew me away! It was the first time I saw a popular song merged with a movie, the whole visual magic that later made music videos the rage. The movie opened up with "Whatcha See is whatcha get" by The Dramatics.
Here's a blurb about it from a year 2000 rescreening:

Rarely seen since its release in 1973 and never released on video, Wattstax is a hidden treasure among the concert films of the rock and soul era. It's a documentary of an August 1972 concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum meant to commemorate the 1965 Watts riots; the concert drew an overwhelmingly African-American crowd of 100,000 and turned into a memorable black-pride event. Director Mel Stuart not only focuses on the big names on the Coliseum's stage but also takes his camera out into the community, watching and listening to Watts residents talk about everyday life in the inner city.

The film's highlights include R&B legend Rufus Thomas wittily corralling the crowd after it abandons the bleachers to dance to his "Do the Funky Chicken"; the Bar-Kays encapsulating everything that was screamingly excessive about '70s funk with "Son of Shaft"; and Richard Pryor playing Greek chorus--and reminding us how beautiful he was.

I heard it described back then as the Black Woodstock. Here's another version of the movie poster...the original posters are going for $100 online.

Hell, I can't remember.............too long ago.

We used to catch Coffy and Foxy Brown on tv, but I never went to the movies to see it.

There was one I went to the movies to see........It was about this woman cop/investigator who sold her soul to the devil to help her find out who killed her boyfriend (I think it was her boyfriend). My sister took me to the drive in to see it...........I can't remember the name of it though.

I remember my parents taking us to the drive in to see Gordon's War. I used to love going to the Drive in as a kid.

Anyone seen the clips of the indie film "Black Dynamite?" It's a current take on a Blaxploitation film written by and starring Michael Jai White. Looks interesting. I'm wondering if this was even released.
