Ok my transmission went out on me last night. I have a 1996 Contour and I know that is going to be major money to get that fix, so its cheaper to get rid of it.

I just don't know where to start. The buying a new car game is tiring to me...I have to decide what is best...buy or lease.....and I am just irriated that I have to go through this again.

Any advice.

i was gonna post bout leasin a couple weeks ago....

the only thing leasing is good for is if u wanna roll around in something that you really can't afford.

I never did understand the Leasing of a car....

As for where to start Mocha I will tell u I researched alot on the Altima before I got one.... After a month of researching perks and dowfalls of getting one... I then researched on what dealership to use.... Thats when the stress starts to come in cause dealers are such scum (most of them)....

Get your financing straight before going to the dealership that way you have the power to negotiate on the price.

1- Use the internet to get your prices for new and old.
2- Use kelly's blue book to back into a purchase price.
3- If your looking at used cars, look at those with the warrenty still intact.

The blue book value is not the "red book" value...or is it grey....

anyhoo there is another value book that they actually go by.....

if u go at the end of the month...when they are tryin to make their quota....you are more likely to get a good deal...

leasing can work if u just wanna drive a nice car for a couple years.....no investment......its like living in an apt.....would u live in an apt if you could own a house?

i was just in the library researching this. go to the consumer's desk (every library has one) and there should be MANY books about cars and buying a car. the book that i enjoyed and learned from was called

What car dealers won't tell you: the insider's guide to buying or leasing a new or used car

by Bob Elliston

this will help in that research everyone is telling you to do...

Great advice!

But I would like to re-emphasize:

Buy Asian...you cannot go wrong. Those cars last forever!

Honda
Toyota
Nissan

Even consider the Hyundai. They have really improved and has a GREAT warranty.

And I agree with Que. Leasing is ONLY good if you wish to lease an expensive car...and do not plan to do much driving or you will PAY PAY PAY for going over the maximum yearly mile limits...

my girlfriends got caught up in this... MAN... they are paying out the behind! and when they got the option to buy, the were psst at the amount of money they had to come up with or finance (which ever one it was)...

the mileage over was HORRIBLE...

I didnt know I had responses...it didnt pop up.

Anyway, the reason I considered leasing is because I was not prepared to buy a car right now. I was financially getting rid of other things first....so that is why the lease

I have spent a lump sum of my savings getting my old car fixed so a lot of things I was considering when I was thinking about the leasing.

Also I am considering a Honda Accord Sedan.....so we will see.

honda accord is expensive.....considering that u may have to lease it which means that u will basically just drive it to and from work....no trips....which means that u might as well buy a hyundai....cheap but NICE cars....and they stand by their product.

...i have a toyota corolla and my mom has had 2 toyota avalons...she leased the first one, and bought the second one...neither of us have had any problems since we've gotten our cars...the maintenance is cool, and toyota has a good reputation...make sure you do a little research, and like andre said, get your financing shit together so you can get the upper hand in bargaining for whatever car you want...

what did i tell u about that damm FORD !!!
F.O.R.D = Found On the Road Dead,
Fix Or Repair Daily, F*cked OveR Dodge...lol:D

REMI's TOP PICKS FOR CARS ...............

HONDA/ACURA*......... ask ADMIN himself,,,,,, hondas last forever !!!!!! all u have to do is keep them tuned and the oil changed and a timing belt every 90k milkes

TOYOTA*........... will last forever ,, you'll have to shoot it to kill it ,,look into a CAMRY or COROLLA..

VW*............... i drive a VW ,, my 1st car was a VW ,& i work for VW & AUDI:D , i have over 200 thousand miles on my car and i drive back and forth to VA in it ,,,, (OKOK .. so what i rebuilt my car from scratch)

of these 3 companies i recomended,, looking into what is known as " a lease return/ certified vehicle" every dealership has these cars on their lots, they are NEW cars that have been leased for short periods (24 or 36 months) they usually have low mileage (under 40k miles) and are still under FACTORY WARRANTY !!!!

whats your price range???

Mr RED's got's some good wisdom!!!! Haahahaha!:beer

I drive a 1995 Geo Prism (Same as Toyota Corolla...both built at the GM/Toyota plant in CA)

My last car was a 1993 Geo Prism. When I purchased it in Dec of 1994, it had 34K miles. When it became terminally ill in early 2002...it was at 317,000 miles!

I treated that car pretty poorly...I would go about 30K miles before changing oil...I would run that bad boy intil the oil light went on....I would never wash it...etc...

US cars are getting better...but they have not matched the quality and endurance of the Honda/Toyota/VW's yet.

Well, I believe that the American car manufacturers and the foreign car manufacturers had different guidelines when they made cars. I believe that the foreign car makers emphsized on QUALITY and endurance while the American car makers emphesized on making sure that people will continue to buy BIG gas guzzler cars every 5-7 years. The American car dealers were doing well until the gas shortage of the 70's. Americans then noticed that the foreign cars lasted longer and had better gas milage and started buying the foreign cars. That is why Chrysler needed a Govt. loan to pull itself out. Nobody was buying their cars because their cars were crap! How many Chrysler cars beyond 15 years are still rolling today? How many foreign cars have lasted 15 years and more? It's sad but true. US cars used to suck. But the American cars are getting better and better...but so are the foreign cars. At one time the worse of the Japanese cars were better than the BEST of the American cars. What a shame for our American car company.

Now we will always find exceptions, but no matter how we cut it, the foreign cars were made better...and lasted longer than the American cars.

i was just reading an article that said the American government is more concern with outcomes than in procedures...

interesting...

Before the Ack, I was rolling a 91 Accord.....shyt was sweet and used no gas (I have a 5 speed)

**Can you drive stick?**:D

Anyway, Mocha...since I know you and all...Ummm you'd look good in a Civic or a Altima. I don't really see you in a Toyota and Lawd, if you buy a ford....Ima talk about ya ass 44 years. Good luck Boo.....

PS: If you buy, don't trade your car in. Don't even drive your car to the lot..tell them what they already know, you can sell it for more money than they are gonna give you in trade.

Oh, and it takes no less than 4 hours to buy a car at a dealership...so don't be in a hurry and keep saying the word NO! It drives dealers crazy:D and one mo thang...have a few business cards from your job with you...and if they are not talking the numbers you are do the following:

1. Get up
2. Take the card out of your purse and hand it to the dealer
3. Tell him/her that they can reach you there when they get a car in that is at your price
4. Start to walk off

Only things American worth driving is a GM Trucks, Buick or Cadillac, and those are built with the best quality for Keeblers...

American car manufacturers built their low end market cars to last only 4 years, while foreigners build them to last 30 years... My cousin has a Volvo with 400,000+ miles, and it's still rolling...
