but you get a $50 rebate. Que, Tivo is a Digital Video Recorder (No Tape) and the one I have can record upto 60hours on the Hard Drive...

Then if I wanna archive a show, I record it to VCD on my Terapin.:D

Sweet!! VCRs are cool, but I like Digital Recorders.

Yeah, they have a monthly fee. Something like 10 or something dollars a month. Or for a hundred or so more, you can get the lifetime subscription to the service.

Now a friend of mine purchased the TiVo for 100 bucks as a deal with one of those dish satalite subscriptions about a year or so ago... Well, they just lowered his monthly fee to 5 bucks! Now I would buy a TiVO for about 100 bucks and a 5 dollar a month subcription...that would be sweeeeeeet!

Well, if you watched a lot of TV then this would be a great thing for you. The system will actually go out and find programs that it has figured that you like. It is truely a nice system...I just wish that it was cheaper...

so that I can buy one.

So how does this compare with Satellite systems like dirrect TV? And do I still have to have cable too????

good questions...

doesnt make sense to have a tivo (150), digital cable ($50 a month or so), tivo subscription ($10 a month).....what other fees exist?

TiVo works with digital TV and all satellite TVs. The best way to put it is that TiVo is the next generation "VCR". It records, but it also looks at your viewing pattern and will find programs that you like and record them if you wish. You can record many many hours of tv on these things (like more than 30 hours of TV programing. It sounds really good, but only if you are watching lots of TV. Other than that, ya might as well keep the VCR. All I know is that when people get one...they swear by it.

Now the pricing is definitely an issue with me.

I do not want to pay an extra 10 bucks a month for it on top of cable. (I'll pay 5 bucks a month, though)

When the "lifetime" price goes way down, I will consider it.

If I can get one for 100 bucks and a 5 dollar or free subscription for the movie guide...I'M THERE! :D

Now I already have a similiar device to a Tivo in my computer:

http://mirror.ati.com/products/pc/aiwradeon7500/index.html

This is really nice (I use this card to capture most of my TV pics).

It is not as good as a TiVo or Replay TV, but it's realy cool. I can record TV programs to the Computer's hard drive etc etc...It even comes with a RF remote control...

I'll hold me for now until those digital video recorders hit my price sweet spot! :D

I heard you can eliminate commercials? How about making a digital recording of a pre existing VHS tape?

I didn't know it could do 60 hours. And its clear as a bell? No SLP type muddiness? Admin, you were talking about TIVO suggesting other programming after sensing what You were watching, and that it had recorded a bunch of crap you didn't want. I assume this is a feature you can option out of? I could take the cash I am not wasting on PS 2 and buy one.

Que:

To me it's worth having my Tivo. You are right about the cost of cable TV per month and the cost of Tivo and the subscription, but before I got the Tivo, I used to pay my Cable bill saying to myself that I have all of these channels and I am not home enough to watch $50 with of cable per month!!!

Now with my Tivo, I can tell it what to record for me and when I get home from work or whatever, I can sit back and watch all the shows that it recorded while I was:

Sleeping
At Work
At The Barber Shop
At The Mall
At The Hardware Store
Having sex
OnTheHush
Watching another Show
Out of Town
Etc....

Dre:

Tivo WILL record the commercials. It has no way to stop recording and then start recording again, unless you are sitting there with the remote in hand controlling it.

On playback, you can fast forward thru commercials…. so don’t believe that hype. Dude at Best Buy, straight lied to me when I asked him that question. I found out after I recorded my first program and I saw commercials, I then logged onto Tivos website and found that it was true, plus the instruction manual tells the same story about commercials.

Basically, if the show is 30mins long, Tivo will record 30mins.

How it’s paid off for me?

I archive shows to VCD, NOT VCR. So, if I wanna watch “Living With Michael” again, I can just pop in a (digital) VCD of it and not have 50 Video Tapes worth of shows laying around getting dusty.

Replay TV is another device similiar to TiVo. It claims to have the ability to skip commercials. This technology is not totally accruate...and supposely works about 98 percent of the time...

click here for the faq (http://www.digitalrecorder.tv/ReplayFAQ.htm#How%20reliable%20is%20the%20Commerci al%20Advance%20featur)

Go to Replay TV here...

hahahah...that makes sense...

But that's the crux of the whole thing...

You are recording so that we can view...later...during playback. I do not know about TiVo, but Replay TV can be programmed to automatically skip the commercials during playback...with about 96% accruacy. So, theoreticly, a person can watch American Idol back to back without commercials...during playback.

But commercials don't really bother me anyway...I think that commercials are half of the fun...

The future looks bright for the TiVo's out there. I WILL get one...it's just a matter of when...

There are just too many good programs out there for me to watch! :D
