I found the following in my monthly devotional guide. I tore this page out on Sept 5 because the opposite side was about tithing and I am going through some financial difficulties. It wasn't until yesterday that I turned the page over and realized that devotion fits what our nation is going through right now.
I realize that there are people on this board who are not believers in the Bible or Christians. This is not meant to offend you. It's only intent is to offer some inspiration for those who do.
I apologize for the length but there was no part I felt I could leave out.
Holding On
(Read John 11:17-27)
Martha said to Jesus "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God." John 11:27 (NIV)
I watched as the squirrel scampered down the tree. It saw me and stopped for a few moments, hanging on upside down. It's bright eyes darted from side to side. I sighed. I felt that life had just turned me upside down, and I wished that I could manage to hold on as effortlessly as this little creature seemed to be. I'm not the only one who has felt such upheaval. Events had turned Martha's life upside down. Her beloved brother Lazarus was dead. And the one person who could have made a difference had, inexplicably shown up four day too late. Martha could have asked why. She chose, instead, to say. "I believe". When we do not understand our natural inclination is to panic, rather than to trust. But Martha's example teaches us that Christ always knows what he is doing. Our trust in him can keep
us stable when life turns us upside down.
Prayer Lord, when life seems topsy-turvy, help us to hold to you. When our hearts ask "why?" give us the strenght to say, "I believe".
On this national day of prayer, I recite the Lord's prayer in remembrance of the ones lost, and to show support of the ones left behind. Amen
