I just didnt feel like he would have the political pull and leadership to be able to influence other countries properly....I was skeptical, but hopeful that he would be able to overcome all his ISSUES (divisive election, no strong track record of EXCELLING, etc) and grow into his position. BUT .... as it seems he is totally not able to even influence ISRAEL! ISRAEL is killin Palestinians....civilians....terrorists....etc.... with little regard for their lives. I don't know a lot about this entire conflict...but I do know that human decency and rights....are the supposed reasons that we don't like korean and china...
and so now...Colin Powell....will go over to try to be a statesman...BUSH has failed. and America is weaker than ever....we can expect more problems from this. i mean here we are tryin to galvanize the world to bomb iraq again ... and yet we can barely do that....now that's saying something.

Hmmm.... Interesting.
Maybe I picked the WRONG time to say it...but this is what I was saying the day after the bombings. That George Bush was NOT to be trusted and would make things WORSE.
Glad to see we now agree Que. ;)

I was watching some of the commentary on this topic over the week-end to gain some addtional insight.
Points:(1) Bush has some in fighting within his cabinet regarding how to deal with the situation. Chaney and Rumsfelt(sp) want to take a hard line, but Collin Powell is the moderate. Bush has adopted Collin Powells approach.(2) Bush will suffer for taking a hard line with Israel. Why ? Cause the Jews have more money to finance who they want elected. Basically, if you don't go along with them, they will use all there power to bring you down. In NY here you had rallies this past week end where Jews were telling Bush what to do! (3) Sharon(sp) Wants to take the Palestinian's land that Israel now occupies. He didn't listen to the UN. He didn't listen to Clinton, and he don't give a Rats Ass about what Bush has to say. It an't so much Bush, it's more of what America has created a Monster(Israel) that we now have to deal with. Same shyt as Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan, but on the flip side.
I'm open to hearing contrary points of view, cause it's a complex topic.

yes....
we created some monster's there....but i think israel has always been seen as a little different....because of their PACT with GOD....or whatever reason....We have provided them more weaponry than any of the other countries...i mean...apache helicoptors, f-16's, m-16's, i forget the tank name...those are all state of the art and make a huge difference...
right now they feel like they answer to no one...but you have to consider what has changed for them....
1. America now has a better understanding of terror...and has declared war on terrorists
Imagine a suicide bomber hitting somewhere in the US about once a month.....any random target....that would get OLD! imagine if Texans decided they wanted to go back to Mexico...and at what lengths a person will go through to be FREE. BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.

all those jokes about BUSH...remember...WHAT IS SAID IN JEST...sometimes bears truth.
Doesn’t know we GIVE Israel about 2 billion a year.
The thing that gets me is that The world gave Israel that little spot over there and now they all of a sudden get high and mighty and want to ride rough shot over people that don't have the same military might. Maybe another case of David and Goliath?

why is it that most of the arab nations don't like israel and thusly, don't appreciate the US either. Perhaps this will show them that israel is NOT a puppet...that they are doing this on their own.....that we influence their policy very little...AND SO...
KEEP YOUR CAR BOMBS...KEEP YOUR SUICIDE BOMBERS....
I am not sure America could handle that!
The Arabs begun disliking Israel back when the UN gave them the land. I don't know all the facts that surround how they picked it, but I'm sure it has a lot to do with them danm near being exterminated by the Germans. The 7 day war didn't help them either with respect to being liked by Arabs.
I guess the conclusion is that the Arab world sees it as, "If it wasn't for the US we would have been kicked your ass".
Don't get it twisted, the only reason why America supports Israel is because they have the money to finance the lobbies to get what they want from the Government. Israel can't do Jack beans for America.

I'm sure I understand much except that they aren't trying to hear what Bush is demanding. . .that's abundantly clear.

...israel ain't scared because they don't have anyone to be scared of!!! they knew 8 years ago that Clinton would push for peace, but when his ass had enough, that was it!!! bush doesn't have the political savvy to handle bidness the way he should...condellezza rice should be the one working the closest with powell to get shit together...bush needs to shut the hell up...

I heard Bush on the news today and I am not hopeful about him making things any better in the Middle East. I heard him criticizing Clinton's efforts but when I compare the 2, I don't see Bush's efforts as even coming close.
It seems to me that Bush, instead of acknowledging his own shortcomings, seeks to blame someone else for the problem. I don't see Bush as having any real skills as a peacemaker. I think it is vital that he understand his own weaknesses and recognize that he needs a crash course in diplomacy. He will also need to be quick on his feet - not something that I think he's capable of doing.
I'm also concerned with Colin Powell going over to try to broker some sort of peace. My concern is that Powell, like Bush appears to be, has a military mentality and I'm not certain that mentality engenders itself to a peacemaker mentality. In fact, I'm not sure that there are any real diplomats in positions of influence in the State Department now.
I'm wondering if he would be big enough to call on past Administration officials to help him navigate this morass until he has a footing on the issues.
Like you, I don't know a lot about this conflict but I am trying to understand it. So far as I've seen and heard recently, I have to say that I side with Israel but I do believe decisive action needs to be taken quickly.
