Fam.

My car, the bat mobile, is sick. The transmission is shot...I found out the diagnosis today. They will let me know how much tomorrow it will be, but it looks like it will be an additional $2800. It has already been close to $500 just to diagnose the problem.

My car is not even totally paid for...i still owe about $2500 on it.

Should i pull the plug and get a new car...

or

Pay to fix my baby.

Those of you that have ridden in the car...know that that's my baby...i am very very saddened by this.......:(

buy a new car, the amount you pay to get that car fix will be the amount you will pay to pay it off.

Unless your goal is to be note free, I wouldnt waste the money on that old car. But again if you want to be car note free, pay it. but still you will pay for that then still owe, and something later might come along.

Get a new car!

Car aint paid for,... What about your warranty... What is the make and year... I wouldn't put more than a grand into it...

it's a 94 with 120,000 miles on it...

but it is a gem...it's not like an OLD car......

120,000 mile aint a lot... But, usually putting that amount money in a car, will require addiction upgrade to follow...

Dude '94! What are you driving, 8 years to pay for a ride... Bentley or Ferrari...

que90nek
03-20-2002, 01:39 PM
yes...

normally this indicates many more problems to come...

but transmission is so major.....any other problem would be so minor. i have already pre-imptevely (new word) replaced breaks and belts and all fluids...

my wife will use YA'LL's arguments on me...so keep them coming!

i say...that i should get it fixed...then in a few months i won't have ANY payments left on it...and ...any minor maintenance that occurs at that point...
will have plenty of saved up money behind it.......

It's a rackette...
When you think all is said and done, something else pops up...

I haven't had any major problems, and my truck will be paid for this year... But, I think I am going to buy a new one...

i am not ready to get the ride that i REALLY want.

my next new car was gonna be one that i REALLY want.

the car i have right now is the car that i REALLY want.

but she is sick......

and she has been phased out...they no longer make 3000's.

so...

now...it's time to talk SUV. but....i'm not ready. financially...for what i want.

I know where you're coming from que. I was in the same predictament a couple months ago.

Right now your current car will cost you $5300. Look up the value of your car in the blue book and see what it's worth and compare it with this figure. That can also be a helper in deciding what to do.

Also, if all your warranties are gone, then you really are assed out. You can go ahead and fix the problem now, but in a couple months something else could go wrong....meaning mo' money, mo' money, mo' money.

I know how you feel about getting something else. If you're gonna put money into something you at least want it to be what you really want as opposed to just getting something to make due. Check around the different car lots. You may be surprised that the vehicle you really want doesn't have to cost as much as you think.

Que i'm sorry, i know you love her......I say tell the hospital to fix her and keep her as your second ride......Is she at the dealer?

Quick question, how does the transmission go? Asking because i do nothing to my car but gas and go...I know it's in need for tune-up.

A transmission can go just from normal wear and tear over time or it can come from not shifting the gear shaft correctly. For example if you're going in reverse and don't wait to fully come to a complete stop to then shift into drive that can cause the little teeth in the gear shaft to become chipped. After awhile that does cause problems. This applies to manual (5-speed) and automatic transmissions.

Uh tee, when's the last time you checked your oil, tires, and fluids? It's a good idea to keep up with those things so that your car can last at least 10 years. The owner's manual will tell you how often you need to check on the different things that need to be maintained.

In the event that it's not there, the manufacturer websites usually have something online that will give you a run down on how often you're supposed to maintain various aspects of your car.

I get advise Que on car problems. I am loving this. LOL :p

My opinion: If that's your baby...pay what it costs to keep your baby. Sentiments can go a long way.

By your own admission...money is not an issue, so go with the sentimental value...since she is your BABY.

I can imgaine your pain...I felt it when I had to say goodbye to my Nissan a while ago....

I say if it means that much, fix it....even if later on you end up getting a new car, never trade in a paid for car...keep it in the garage and reminice(sp) every now and then with a sunday spin at 90 MPH on Rt. 100 towards Gibson Island :D

Fix it and keep it...thats my take on it!:hammer

lol@qjai....

that was good....

toward gibson island....

yes, and they say that no man is an island
at least thats the plan
until i look at that picture
that picture that greets me
that meets me
in the morning.

Afterall, I've heard how fast you drive your car~!!!!! :upto: You think that has anything to do with it~???

Of course, you will do what's best for you and, in this case, your baby~!! :hearts: It might just be cheaper to keep her~!! LOL

Not that money is an issue~!! :hammer Never that. . . :D

Fix it, and like Tee said you can have it as your second ride. You know it would kill you to let that car go! 120,000 miles of fun, I can not see you letting that go!!

fortunately the wife totally agreed. but hell, yes i was surprised! my car has been cared for to the utmost! speed has nothing to do with the amount of miles that is on a car.....i am just blessed that this problem didnt become too much while i was on my way to greenville or somethin. i paid close attention to my car...gas mileage things like that...i could go up to 450miles on one tank....most folks can only go 300.

and as far as money being an issue....this is what savings accounts are for....those unexpected things that will happen.

I ain't gonna lie....I don't even know how to check my oil....sad i know...My tires were rotated and balanced last month...i get that free because I purchase my tires from NTW now NTB, I am due for an oil change which i'll get the weekend, there they check all my fluids.

10 years, well i do have 96, 4 more to go. If i don't have any major problems i will.

I do know i need brakes.

...that the "white shadow" is feeling bad...if i were you, i'd probably get the transmission fixed, since you've taken such good care of your baby...hell, you've had it since '94, and she has been good to ya up to now...fix her and spend many more miles together!!

recommendation: get transmission work done by people who are going to analyze your transmission fluid. not people who just throw it away. transmission fluid should not get that dirty....so even if u inspect it yourself...u can see that the pink color it should be...WHY IS IT BLACK!

Que, you talking to me?

Let me ask this

when they check your oil, is that for engine or transmission?

I feel your pain.....

Question: Say you fix it, can you turn around and sell it, maybe break even for the cash already dropped???

I know you were talking to Que, but when they check your oil, thats for your engine. I guess if you requested for them to check your transmission fluid they will.

I just had the heater core replaced in my 97 Pontiac Grand Am. I also had to have brakes, some hoses changed and a oil change. With coupons and my company discount it cost me about 545.00. I just hope nothing else goes wrong.

good point...

the blue book would break even, but....the actual value is more because it is in very good condition and is a car that is no longer made....and is a very good car !!!!!!!!!!!!! UGHH!!!!!!!!!!!

You can fix it and then sell it, if it's giving you problems. However if you really like the car and you are attached to it then you just got to anny up!

I hope you didn't get that Transmission quote from the dealer. I own a 1986 Mercedes Benz 300E with 230,000 and still going strong. I know when something is wrong.. I call up Mercedsa, they give me a price and I know what not to pay. I take it to the local Jamaican brothers who know thrir foreign cars and get it done for half price.

New transmission might last you another 150,000 miles.

I also got this guy that has a mobile garage. He will drive to you and do the work. All he needs is a pair of vice grips and three rubber bands. I don't do the dealer because my car isn't under warrentee no more. I even found this guy online to order original BOSH aftermarket products for less than 1/2 price. Mercedes wanted to charge me 225 each for a front lens cover made of plastic, i got them for 78.00 each.

Do some research. How is the engine. How are the wheels, breaks. My first car 1984 Buick Regal is still running after 5 owners and two transmissions. Has over 300,000 miles. At least those transmissions were only 800.00.
