so i am training a new admin who makes more than me; she has never been an admin before and doesn't have the skill set, though, i think she was hired cause she is nice and smart. i am in the process of reviewing work load with my manager so that he can go to HR regarding getting me more pay (he is in favor). (this was in the process before she started the company)

also, there is another admin, who i clearly have more skills, but we have been here the same amount of time.

now with both of these admins they do support managers at a higher level than my managers; but i have more people and i am a secondary support for their managers plus i have a deeper work load and skills are far more superior.

here is the money difference: (all money ref is below what we actually make)

me with mad skills: make 32k, grade 1
new chick no skills: make 38k, grade 2
old chick, middle range skills: make 46k, grade 3

how do i work into our conversation that his bench mark needs to be far above what the new chick makes?

he needs to get up into what the grade 3 admin makes which would probably be the high salary range of the grade 2 admin level...

who, what determines the grade???... even with your skills and the annual 3% yrly increase..it still won't put you where you deserve to be....In cases like this....time for you to create a new position in a new department...to showcase your talent...that's what happens we get in under the wire, we gotta show our ware smile, juggle shit, type with our toes...and they still bring in others who can't do diddly and they make more... :blast..like we don't need 50k+ to live...:blast

I hate you havent got that fit yet$$$$...where the light bulb, the company the bosses..say bada-bing!!!..she's the one..she can handle my needs let us pay her!! her worth...

the good thing about this for me is that my manager is cool in which he understands if the company won't pay me, he is open if i have to leave and make more money; he said he tried to make them convert his position but they wouldn't let him; if he had been successful in that area, i would have gotten a nice jump. this is why i'm willing to do the extra work to get the salary and stay because i got THE BEST group of managers ever and they are willing to fight for me. i love that.

Hula, you say "Admin", and talk about "skillset" and workload. What exactly is the job? Is it network administration/information technology? i swear I need to get my azz back to school!:(

I beleive she's referring to Administrative Assist.....a.k.a "secretary"... out her in Cali they call them Admin's....or clerical staff...

I'm surprised that y'all discussed how much $$ y'all made. Where I work, if you talk about your pay or even your bonuses...that would be a MORTAL SIN which is punishable...so we have been told recently.

It's tough these days. I'm surprised that anyone is even talking about getting higher pay. Although, it makes sense to me that the support for higher level managers get more pay. (it may not be fair, but...I can kinda see it)

I am curious about the new 'admin'. Was the position that the new admin has open for you to apply for?

I bet Hula...wasn't interested in changing up on managers...often when you find a good fit..sometimes one has to by pass a position/promotion...many jobs are listed with the pay scale...but when they fill the spot you don't always expect to be the one to train 'em...especially if there are a higher pay grade...that's wrong...IMO

we don't talk about it. but it wasn't hard to find out.

the position was wide open... they begged for me. but i wouldn't go because, like chey said, i'm in a SWEET spot. outside of the money, my managers treat me like gold.

her job is a lot more work because of the number of people and tedious tasks of their work she has to do. the projects i'm on makes me more visible (i.e. valuable) across the company because of the department i am in and how we service the company. i have notoriety. in the new admins position i would have none and i loose a lot of priviledges i worked hard for and would have to start from scratch retraining that manager and staff and workload to do what "I" want them to do.

i'd rather be seen as a "partner" rather than a regular dime a-dozen admin. (and if they ever decide to cut the admin force - i needs to be the last one walking out the door). so now i'm just trying to get paid like a partner because i know the company IS able. its all about if they want to. in addition, i just found out, by company policy, i am due for a level upgrade, i just need to add the extra sauce on paper for the extra points.

this thread was asking a creative way of throwing out a salary benchmark so i dont get undercut.

economic crunch my ass: i need to live ;) i have no shame in asking. even the way that whole conversation started was a blessing from Jesus himself! and the way my company do budgets and the way they've been hiring... uh... i need to get in on this before the mid year money freezes kick in in the next fiscal year ;)... its all strategy. :D

a few months back, i applied into another dept, higher position, much higher vp and a temp got it over me. a lot of junk behind that one, but, short story shorter: they owe me A LOT in terms of why i didnt get that, over, again, a less qualified, and now they are realizing, a continuous mess up, of an admin. this doesn't stop my move on if i need to, or when i need to, but, it does teach me a lot about headquarter corporate work politics. i can play the game too!

I wouldn't even mention anyone else's salary. I would focus on my contributions to the company and how it merits a higher salary. Once you come in at a lower wage it is hard to be righted.

This is where I get ideas for my salary negotiations (did it for the first time, it felt good) and interview questions.
