Seems like everyday I read the AJC some company is laying off thousands of workers. Just this week alone there's been Wachovia and now the CDC. With this seemingly becoming a bad trend, are you worried about your job?

We've been through three major shake ups - however I work for income and we bring in over 100 million dollars a year. It is an unspoken conversation that the income department really never gets touched. About four people left of their own accord - we redistributed the work and chose not to rehire and that kinda stuff saves us.

HOWEVER, never say never.:(

This is another reason I work at home, now grated my parents can always lose their jobs, and what not but most folks may need childcare while job-hunting.

I thought being in the healthcare industry, we'd be safe, but the first part of the year, upper management made bad decisions throughout the company that we're paying for now. Q1 they blew the entire OT budget for the rest of the year. The OT was basically unlimited so people were having 40-50 hours worth of OT on one check. They have let go alot of the stragglers and people just not pulling weight. They've been on a hiring freeze for a couple months so they are pulling resources from every corner that they have. Normal caseload for us average a day is about 45-50 per person. Lately, It's been between 130-140 a day, but I try to keep the complaining to a minimum. I have a job. I got my raise and bonus this year(before they realize they were blowing the budget early lol) I'm set up at home. In the back of my mind though I'm ready and prepared if they decide to tighten their pockets even more.

not yet. my position and departments i'm in... like Pam said... they'd have to cut all that fat outside of us before they cut on the meat. i can even stretch and say that my job type i can see being axed. but i got two managers that like to fight, so, the company would have a hard fight, not with me, but with them. so i'm blessed for now.

I try not to worry about layoffs and such, b/c I really do not have any control over what happens so there's no use giving myself an ulcer. The best I can do is try to be prepared for any unexpected financial emergency.

Not worried about layoffs where I am right now..........a few years back, yes.........but not now.

When folks leave a position here, they don't replace them if they don't see a need, they redistribute the work. Instead of doing a lot of hiring from outside the company, they are training the CSA's and CP's we have and moving them into higher positions.

I come to work, do my job, follow the rules, so I don't worry about losing my job even though it can happen. I have been with this company for 23 1/2 years.

Not really. I work for a very small company, in an industry that is growing daily.

We do computer/printer repairs.

It's not something I foresee unless we go through some major changes.

Besides that I'm 3rd in seniority in my dept, so even if they had to let "some" os us go...there are folks who'd get the axe before me...thank God.

But I'm looking for another gig anyway.

I'm not too terribly worried having experienced it 3x in 3 various scenarios. My faith sustains me and doesn't permit much room for fears to set in. And playing into people's fears employers try to straight pimp you with unrealistic expectations for ridiculous compensation.

with the state wide merge / restucture...many offices closed..all except budget & finance..if anything it grew...pulling in more public sector employee data that once upon time belonged to LA's offices or Sacramento offices....

all our changes come from DC the International..all we can do is wait and see how the axe swings...and where..they've already created a call center state wide...

And with minimum wage increasing to a whopping $6.55 that's going to add the smaller businesses to the toll.
