View Full Version : I Can't Find a Job!

After all these years in school, I'm having the hardest time finding a job. Number one hold up, experience. How the hell am I supposed to get experience if no one will hire me? Basically I was hoping to get a job in the school system (P12), but it looks like that isn't going to happen. For a lot of school systems, you've got to know someone to even get in as a teacher. If I had my teaching certification, I would've had a job before I graduated. So now I'm broadening my search. I've applied for a few counseling jobs at different colleges here in Atlanta. It's less money, but I actually like the idea of working with college students. I've applied for about 7 different positions, from admissions counselor to student affairs counselor. Keep your fingers crossed for me cause I'm starting to feel like a bum. I still work the bookstore gig, but it's not hardly paying me anything.

My next option, if none of these jobs pan out, go back and take the certification in psychology and teach at the high school level.

What was your major?

What did receive, a certificate or degree?

What do you want to do?

when i was at my sister's graduation from Bowie State this past may a young man was sitting beside me and told me that he had gotten his master's last year and the issue he was having was the expeirence thing too. he needed experience to get a good paying job and then he wanted to go on to even further his education, but the schools he was interesed in attending told him he needed to have work experience before they even accpeted him into thier programs. so he is working an entry level job making less money than several of his friends who didnt even go to college.

and the student loan folk are knocking at the door..........

My major was Guidance and Counseling. I have my M.Ed. My intention was to find a position as a high school counselor, but my degree is qualified for higher ed as well. I have my P-12 Ga Certification.

Wow E, I'm sorry to here this. My other friend just got her Masters in Counseling from GA State and she working at Target or something, having a hard time as well.

I'm sure you've been though all the avenues like the school for placement and all that stuff. Any of the places where you were subbing hiring. My friend works in Hapeville and I have a friend on the Board at Clayton (SIGH). I'll ask around for yah.

Thing about Clayton, which is where I subbed and interned, due to the Acreditation Crisis, students are leaving and the allot counselors based on the enrollment numbers, so some schools, high schools in particular, lost a counselor. Folks get settled into counseling positions and never leave. The ones who wanted to leave found that other systems didn't want the Clayton County folk, so they just stayed where they were. They're hiring for teachers like crazy, but I'd have to go back and get my certification in some subject, as all schools don't have psychology. I'd teach English in a heartbeat though.

I'm hoping something pans out at the higher ed places. I just applied for an Undergrad Academic Advisor position at the Savannah College of Art & Design Atlanta Campus.

Thank you Pam. I, however, am not qualified for that position. You have to have at least a Master of Ed in Reading or English.

My internship supervisor tipped me to a high school counseling position open this morning, so I've contacted the principal. We'll see how that goes.

Well, didn't get that one. Had an interview for an elementary counselor position on Monday. It went really well. I was told I'd have their decision by Friday.

Dilemma: Although I haven't heard from the elementary school, a job posting for another elementary counselor position was just posted yesterday. Should I wait to hear something, tomorrow morning being my deadline, and then try the other school. Or should I just call now and try to set up an interview?

Have your irons in many fires. If one comes through - you can always call and say thanks but I'm pleased to say I've accepted another position. Folks nowadays understand with the market the way it is that you have to have several things going. Good Luck

Well, I called and turns out through people who know me, a former teacher and parapro, who talk, the parapro is now the principal's secretary, they'd been trying to get ahold of me. So I emailed my resume.

Then before I could even attach and send my email, a counselor from Henry Co. called me about setting up an interview for a middle school position they're looking to fill.

Something has to stick. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Am I wrong for not wanting to work with all White kids?

I know that "some" parts of Henry are quite diverse, but not this particular school. I cancelled the interview with them because I haven't gotten the all clear with my certification yet. The application is in, but hasn't gone through. They need whomever they hire to already have it, so there is no use wasting their time and my gas until I've gotten it straightened out.

You should have kept that interveiw. The certification is a mere technicality. They must have known when they called that you did not have it. And by the time schoold starts or they make a decision your could have it in hand. Just a thought. Keep interviewing and good luck!!!!!

From what the woman was telling me, they didn't even want to waste their time interviewing me and I did not have certification. There would be no way they would hire me.

Had an interview at another elementary this morning. I think it went really well. This one was a little more structured in that she had a prepared list of questions. Much better and specific questions than that interview for the high school position. Funny thing, she was the previous counselor and had been promoted to assistant principal. Again, I hope that my lack of experience doesn't keep me from getting the position.

Still haven't heard from the other elementary school, but called to follow up and the position is still open. Not sure how to take that. Either I wasn't what they wanted and they're still looking or they haven't finished interviewing.

Now, it has become even more important that I find a position because my boss let me know that my services will no longer be need as of August 1. Yep, after almost 7 years, I got the pink slip via email.

My roommate from college was in the Fulton County system last I checked. She's been in a few systems and providing she ain't pissed anyone off she may be able to give you a heads up ...I'll see if she's okay with me passing her contact information along because I'm sure you could do a better job networking without me running middleman.

With the two promising interviews, both positions were filled as of this morning. First, with someone she knew, second, I'm not sure. So looks like I'll be back to the world of substitute teaching come this fall. Upside, keeps me in the schools and I make more money than at the bookstore. Downside, not counseling, but you never know what will pop up.

And after talking to my godmother, the interview that needed me to be certified, that I cancelled was just looking for the token Black counselor to deal with "us."

Eringer..

Just keep up the faith girl. Something is gonna come through for you.
This is really discouraging for me because if YOU can't get a job, with how qualified and certified you are, will I be able to get a job when I finish with my degree in Atlanta? Cuz you know thats where I want to relocate, right?

Honestly, it depends on the field. There are plenty of jobs in education, just not that many counseling positions. Healthcare is a wide open field, and even computers. Everything else is taking a hit right now.

I'm seriously looking into a teaching certification and just try to work my way up from there.

Well, as of my last day at the bookstore, I was hired as a co-kindergarten teacher. It came right on time. It's not counseling, but I can gain experience and apply in January or the Spring should jobs become vacant. I've got benefits. Pay is better than I was getting, way better. Best thing, it's on 5 minutes from home, so I'm saving on gas! School starts on Thursday, so little kids, here I come, lol.
