(03-07) 11:24 PST FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) --
A nurse's aide hit a homeless man with her car, drove home with him stuck headfirst in her broken windshield, and ignored his cries for help as he bled to death in her garage over the next two or three days, police say.
Chante Mallard allegedly told police she periodically went into the garage, apologizing to him but doing nothing to help.
Mallard, 25, was arrested on murder charges Wednesday.
"I'm going to have to come up with a new word. Indifferent isn't enough. Cruel isn't enough to say," Tarrant County prosecutor Richard Alpert told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "Heartless? Inhumane? Maybe we've just redefined inhumanity here."
Police said 37-year-old Gregory Biggs probably would have lived had he received immediate help. When the man finally died, Mallard and her friends put the stranger's body in the trunk of another car and dumped it in a park, authorities said.
Mallard allegedly told police she had been drinking and using the drug Ecstasy the night Biggs was hit. The impact hurled him headfirst through the windshield, leaving his broken legs protruding onto the hood.
With the man still lodged in the windshield, the woman panicked and drove a few miles to her Fort Worth home, parked her car in the garage and lowered the door as Biggs pleaded for help, according to police.
When Biggs' body was found Oct. 27, evidence pointed to a hit-and-run, investigators said.
Police last month were tipped that the woman may have been in a hit-and-run collision, Sgt. John Fahrenthold said. Mallard allegedly told a friend details when asked why she was no longer driving her car.
A search of Mallard's house turned up the damaged car with blood, hair and other evidence, authorities said. The car's seats were found in the back yard, and one had been burned.
Mallard's attorney, Mike Heiskell, said: "I think this is overreaching on the part of the prosecution and the police and, in the end, I believe the law will shake out that this was simply a case of failure to stop and render aid."
The medical examiner's office said Biggs suffered no internal injuries and apparently died from loss of blood and shock.
Medical examiner's records listed Biggs' address as a homeless shelter in Fort Worth. His mother, Meredith Biggs, said she had recently begun looking for him.
"How could she just leave him like that to die?" she told the Star-Telegram. "Drugs and alcohol wear off, so why didn't she get him some help? I should have prayed more."

That is just sad and pathetic. And this woman was in the medical field? Now the charge against her is far worse than it would have been if she had called someone. How could you just leave somebody like that? I mean, you hear them crying, you see the blood.....only someone heartless could be that cold.

That has got to be the coldest thing I have ever heard in my life.
How do you leave a person in your windshield. I mean he had to be looking right at her ass while she drove home. WTF? WTS? WTH?
Then to pull him out dead and dump the body??? WTF? WTS? WTH?

I just don't understand???

You gonna go and apologize but not take the man to the hospital. Even if you had to drive there with him still in the window at least he may have lived!!! That is sad and digusting, she knew he was dying and yet she made a conscious desicion not to do anything. That is a shame that after Sept 11 people still have such a low regard for human life!!!

Her attorney is HOPING this will be reduced to a SIMPLE failure to stop and render aid. . .that's is just as sick as the act that woman did in the first place.

Yeah, thats the big news here in Dallas right now. Its leading in the news programs along with the two reports about the kids shooting another kid and the guy who lead a high speed chase through dallas into Oklahoma and rammed a van until it was off the highway killing one of the three people inside.
I don't understand why someone on the road didn't see this man hanging through the windshield and call the police. I really don't understand her letting him stay in the garage for 3 or more days telling him she is sorry, without getting him some help.
The people here in Texas are CRAZY:eek:

she's black, she also made the today show this morning. Said when the man was begging for help she kept repeating to him that she was sorry also. Apparently the coroner's office said had she got him help then he probably could have lived, so the dumb azz will get what she deserves. What a horrible thing to do to someone..

I agree Bright. Her attorney is straight tripping. Saying she just panicked. How do you panick for 2 damn days and watch someone die???
Plus she was apologizing so she knew what she was doing.
Ignant...just ignant.

The attorney is what kills me how can you try to even justify such and act. Just like the attorney that is trying to defend Brent Marsh down here in the crematory fiasco!!! He is trying to get that fool out on bail. If he knows what is good for him he would know that the is safer in jail than he would be out on the streets. They are saying that there are public officials that have family that were supposed to be cremated there and it is going to be hard for him to get a fair trial.

Yes she is black.
They also say that his legs were pretty much all that was injured. He just bled to death. Seems she is in much more trouble now than if she had pulled to the side of the road, had someone call the police and told the police, "hey, I'm high, I hit this man, I take responsibility". Now she had a murder rap hanging over her head. She probably would have gotten arrested for driving under the influence and a lesser charge for hitting the man, but he would BE ALIVE!

that shit makes my stomach turn...to listen to somebody dying for days? I know he was moaning and screaming for help...how did that sick, twisted, sorry excuse for a human being even sleep in the same house hearing that? this is one of those instances where the punishment should fit the crime - let her ass hang through a windshield bleeding and in pain for 2 days...bitch was probably high the whole time...and her attorney? is he on crack, too? can't even fathom it...

I saw the attorney on the Today show this morning. He claims that his client isn't a monster. One point he used to mitigate the state's claims was that the guy lived no more than 24 hours after being struck!!!

If this doesn't make the point clear that some people just think that some people are more expendable than others nothing will. . .the fact that this man was a bum or homeless gives credence that it wasn't that serious.
How about if it was the mayor's son or the police chief's brother. . .I wonder would it still be a consolation that he died within 24 hours vs. 72 hours. . .I think not!

They showed some of the court proceedings on the news last night. The judge upped the bail amount to 250,000.00. Ole girl went to jail. She was boo-hooing like she had been wronged.
The also read some of the police report interviews with her. She came home leaving the man in the windshield, went inside and had sex with her boyfriend. Then they both came out and checked on him. After he died, the boyfriend and his brother dumped the body in the park.
I think they have the boyfriend in custody and are looking for the other person. If I'm not mistaken, they said the boyfriend is the one who told on her. I could be wrong because I also heard she was talking to someone else about it and was overheard and that person told on her.

I watched the video on MSNBC.com from the today show when they interviewed her lawyer.
That mug is nuts. He said her confession was taken under duress (so what), and that the man was only in her garage 1 day (like that makes a difference) and that Chante was just upset and panicked so she called her friends, and they took over and decided to let him die...and dump the body.
Ain't that some shiznet. Trying to blame her friends now??? WTF?

I am listing to the hip-hop station here in Dallas (104.5) and they have the woman (Chantel's friend) on the radio talking about the incident. From what she says, Chantel had told about 6 of them about what she had done. She said she told her that she needed to turn herself in, but she didn't, so the friend called the police. The friend found out about this incident about a month ago.
