How soon should you begin looking for a job when you're still in school?

I would say 6-7 months before you graduate if you are using on campus resources.

If not, maybe a month.

Actually, the job search begins around the second or third year of post high school work. That may sound a bit off, but think about it, the folks who get the best job opportunities most often had the job they wanted in mind prior to finishing their junior year of collage.

In most professions, there is some type of career path established, and most folks that are determined to enter the field of their desire find out what that path is early on.

Summer internships or co-operative education allows the prospective professional to get some insight into the chosen career field prior to graduating with the expectation of determining if their career choice meets their expectations.

In short, one cannot start too early in looking at career/job prospects while in school.

Per my program, I am required to complete a practicum, which I've done this past semester and a 600 hour internship, which I will start in January. Education is a little different in that a lot of open positions aren't posted until the summer, when they are sure faculty aren't going to resign contracts. I can start to narrow down the level at which I want to work, which for me are elementary or high. However, it's a bit of a guessing game as to when is the right time to start actually looking for physical sites where I want to work. Lots of it is word of mouth and who you know type stuff. This I got from my supervisor.

Continue to seek out the when and where for the job opportunities. Your internship should add to your network of contacts.

Check out professional organizations in your field. Conferences can also open up a wide range opportunities, and contacts for future reference.

To be honest I always thought that you should be looking to intern every year while you are in school at the company that is in the business closest to what your degree will be in. And save the last year for the company you really want to work for and intern there. The hope is after you graduate they will hire you on full time. Or if you are lucky enough to still be interning there that that turn you over right after your graduation.

I never went to university and always had a work-a-holic type of mindset, so I was gonna say you should be always looking for a job!
