Fam, do you get the since that folks do not give you props for being 100% honest with them in the work place about your skills?

I bring this up, because I have had several conversations with my new boss ho seems to wanna change what I am capable of doing. She wants me to excel in my knowledge and skill set, but wants me to get it solely through (OJT) On The Job Training?

In my opinion OJT takes an extremely long time vs. sending a person to an off site class. When I got to this dept. I was sent to a class to learn an application. I loved it and I was able to learn what I need to in the 8 hours I was there.

When I cam back to the office, I felt a lot better about the learning and quickly applied my new skills. Now, she is only talking about OJT.

We had a conversation yesterday about me learning a programming language called Cold Fusion. Fam, I am not a programmer. Never once said I was and in the current position I am in, I’m a support person, not a programmer.

After our conversation, she sent me an email with a link to an online Cold Fusion tutorial??? WTF? I didn’t even reply.

So, this morning she came to my desk and asked if I got it. We talked and I told her I’d look at it, but I learn better in a class. The look on her face was like I had just told her “NO, I AINT GONNA DO NUTHIN…BIATCH!”

Fam, I do no know what to do, I have been 100% honest with her and the crazy thing is that we have several programmers in our department who know Cold Fusion and make more money than I do.

Now, I can see that she is wanting me to excel, but OJT? And sending me email links? Please! Woman, send me to an off site class and until then, leave me alone and let me get back to work.

Your thoughts

It's whatever works best for you.

Now for me, OTJ works better for me. I want to be the one to sit at the computer with someone training me. I can take the class, but I want/like the OTJ.

I work in a technical department too. All my customers are internal. Even though I am just a secretary, I work the Resource Center (aka help desk) along with 4 others. I have to help a person with their computer over the phone. A lot of times I Netop into their systems and help them out. Its easier that way. They don't ever explain shit right.

Anyhoo, the company I work for encourages OTJ or class time. The are big on that. If I went to my supervisor today and told him I wanted to do a job opp., he would work on getting it situated for me. They want us to be as good in all areas we feel comfortable in. Right now the motto is "where we work".

Thats just like our company motto of "We live where You Live".

(now ya'll know who a sistah works for if you know that motto and have heard it in commercials.......LOL)

Oh......I said all that to say........You have to do whats best for you. If classroom time is your best learning tool, then go with it. If OTJ is, then go with it.

I personally like a combination off all three. Learning while doing seems to work pretty well for me, but the class would give me a good foundation. Now having said that:

Honesty is a good thing. Tact is a good thing. Honesty and Tact is even better.

To me, basicly your Honesty sounds like this:

"Ta hell with your online training and OJT crap. I want a outside class or nothing"

And even if you did not mean to say that....that can be how what you said/did is perceived, depending on the personality of the person you spoke with.

So being honest is a good thing, but we also have to consider tact. Especially since it is pretty clear that your supervisor is honestly looking after your best interest.

My "Honest Opininon" is is you should take the online tutorial but then also politely ask your boss for a outside class. Maybe you'll get it...maybe you'll not. But it's a win/win situation. The online class can give you a good intro into the subject and the can help you even more. It doesn't have to be outside class or nothing. And even if you might not get the outside class, you will not loose anything by taking the Online class. No matter what you do, other than nothing, you will benefit.

There's not ..nan boss in love with their staff that much...trust me there is an ulterior motive... I'm willing to bet...the discussion has already happened prior to her sending Admin the link...or mentioning OJT......the meeting without Admin...went something like this....

Bosses Boss ....Sally?...we need another programmer..we need someone from your department..that can do Cold Fusion.....that "Admin"..guy..he's highly skilled ..he can do..learn it....while doing his other job...you know Dick the programmer..is moving on...or he's pissed someone off..and they may have to replace him......so we can't be left high and dry.....follow the boys scout creed always be prepared....

Fast forward.......Admin...do this on-line tutorial...

"Admin"...looking at her side-ways...thinking this bitch got me twisted....

Especially since it is pretty clear that your supervisor is honestly looking after your best interest.

Zzz...none of the words in the above statement even go together...remotely....

yea, it can be a feather in Admin's hat...to pick up on cold fusion...or whatever it's called....just to know it.....

But he already stated they have programmers...makeing the doe-ray-me..to do this skill/job/function.....

Now had she stated...we're willing to offer a pay increase...and we want you to be the back-up for the programmers...I'm sure Admin's reply would have been different......On-line tutortials...are cool... to do at your leisure....but i too like class room intensive training...distract me for the day...flood my mind with this knowledge..at the companies expense....wonderful....and then we can talk pay increase...

But don't slide...some shit under the radar...and in a week or two add this too my already full plate....and say...didn't you learn that...I sent you the link:blast
