February 18, 2002 -- A Channel 2 consumer investigation uncovers how women across Georgia are being exposed to a potentially dangerous chemical each time they get their nails done. The substance is called MMA. The nail industry admits its unsafe. Federal regulators call it hazardous, yet Channel 2 found evidence that the chemical is a mainstay in Georgia's discount nail salons.

The feds have known of the danger for 25 years. That's when they first took action against methyl methacrylate (MMA), an acrylic bonding agent so strong it's perfect to make dentures and to adhere to artificial limbs... But use it to make fake nails -- that's risky. Just the ask the woman who found out too late. Her beautiful discount manicure would cost more than she ever imagined.

"I was like, hey, I'll have beautiful, long, perfectly smooth nails," said Randi Shuford. "Pure vanity."

Although this story aired in Georgia, it has been said that MMA is also used in nail salons in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The next time you go to get your nails done, check to see what they are using.

The fact that they wear face masks should be giving people hints, those chemicals harsh. Some of those shops are not sanitary either.

Also the fact that all the bottles/containers they use are not labeled.

You can call me that too, Soft. Now if i could get the raggedy things to grow and stop breaking when they begin to look halfway decent...id be alright.

One of my friend's mother in law lost a finger from an infection she got after getting her nails done. She was a diabetic and she didnt pay attention to the first signs of infection. By the time she went to the Dr. the infection was too bad.
