When Negotiating your salary, How much over you current salary do you ask for?

It depends on whether or not you are applying internally or for a new/different job. Research the job market, or find out what the company provides as compensation for that type of position. Always ask for what you want, especially if the job you are applying for is similar to or the same as your current one. If you're asking for a percentage, then I would say at least 15 to 25%. Hey, this is JMO, but in my case it worked for me!

I know I answered this somewhere....

Exotic is 1/2 right, research is key but 15-25% is unrealistic unless your next job is a grade or position higher than the one you currently hold...

Find out 1st what the job is paying
Them: What salary are you looking for?
You: What is the salary range for this position?

Them: Salary range = $ - $ (which is less than or the same that you make now)
You: My last/current salary (always use your last salary as your spring board to negotiate) was X, with a cost of living and performance increase I am looking for a salary between 5-10% over my last salary.

OR

you can give them a 5K to 10K range (something I do, actually now I do 15K range) and see where they are in the scale.

Example: if you want to make 35K but will settle for 30 but are afraid they may be paying closer to 40 and don't want to play yourself OR if you know the salary is 30's but you want to give yourself wiggle room the answer is:

My salary is dependent upon the position but most likely I am in the 30-40K range.

There are a lot of factors but the point is don't commit to anything if you have questions or it just don't feel right. Think it over or ask somebody and in the meantime tell them you will get back to them in 24 hours if they make an offer you think is off. A lot of negotiation can happen before you say yes, you just have to be the one they want.

otherwise... it's just asking for a raise... negotiating... means you have another offer... or... a company wants to hire you... or... promote you...

find out what your peers are making... at your level of experience... have an idea what the company... is willing to pay... and... expected work load... you could end up doing... alot more... for just a little more money... though... it's more than you are making... now...

Well it a job offer for another University! So I just wanted to know how you go about negotiating, what prices to start at! My supervisor said to start with atleast 3000 more than what I make now!

Just throwing it out there to get what you guys thought or would do.

and go from there...if the range is 55k - 60k but it's given in steps...well you gotta go w/ what they offer depending on your skill/grade

if it's private industry...and they give the same range no steps or grades...shoot for the moon 60K, (IMO) this means this is what they budgeted for...

if you have no idea what they're offering..i always go 5-10K annually of what I was making...

and if none of the above doesn't work...you know what to do.....:blast
