How do you go about asking for more money?
Here’s the scenario:

I was promoted to a new position on December 1, my previous pay is $28,000 annually. Now with the new position I was only given a $2000 increase. My problem is that I want and need to be compensated more, why because the previous employee was making $43, 000 annually. How is that fair to only give me $30,000, when I was doing the girl’s job before she left. Now I’m doing my new job, plus some responsibilities I had as the receptionist. I’ve asked around and the starting pay for service assistant is $37,000. I want what’s fair, and what I’m getting isn’t.

Added:

Compensation wasn't discussed at all. I was asked who much I made and than was told I would get a considerable increase. I never received and offer letter, nor did HR call to finalize pay. (3 strikes against the company)

Ask for it.

State your case and make them say YES or NO and explain WHY.....of coures use caution.

Wow, just ask for it but be careful, thats quite an increase if you hadn't discussed it previously.

And like Midnight said, be careful.

Are you on probation?

No probation.

I'm not asking for what the previous person made, because the position was created for her. But I'm at the least asking for $2000 - $3000 more. But to start me at $30k's, when others start at $37k's is jacked. Even the receptionist before me, who was promoted the same way I was, is getting more than $30,000 per yr.

I hope not to make waves or rumple feathers, but hell, I want what's coming to me or what the hell I'm worth. Cause anyone they would have hired from the outside would have been getting more than $30k.

Thank Tee and Midnight, I just hope I choose my words correctly.

when did you find out that the others were making more money?? before or after you accepted the job?

After,

This is the deal. When the previous person left, I put my name in for the position.
I had to informal interviews, both of which never discussed pay. They asked how much I was making and was told that there would be a considerable increase in pay. Well I got my first check with my new pay rate, and it only added up to $64 extra take home pay. I never negotiated pay or told them what I was expecting, they just gave it to me. Now with seeing how much this increase is, I aint happy. And they know good and well if they had hired someone outside the company they would have paid them more. I just want what's just, and this isnt that.

We got's to be careful...they always will hoodwink us...if given the chance....

I would give them a week or 2 of exmplerary(sp) work...however you found out about the previous...person's salary I wouldn't sweat it....someone is looking for a reaction.....sit low...and watch......follow protocol...and then.."singy-song"...you ass into someone's office..hopefully the head person..or HR...and discreetly and quietly...say...oh...when does the pay increase kick in???...I was expecting pay increase to 33k- 37K...with the new position...and see what they say...

And when they say who...said that...Say the name......and use...their same words..."substainal" increase

Good luck....and if you get nada...inquire about the company's raise / bonus policy???

i would take it to them as if there has been a clerical error that you know will be cleared up in the next pay check...

something like this:

"lol....i got my paycheck the other day and it was virtually the same....when does my new pay start...."

good idea. that way she is not actually askin for it but saying it should be a certain way.

it actually could be an HR oversight.....

aintnojoke
12-19-2005, 03:21 PM
I seriously doubt it's a HR oversight. They thought that extra $2000 per year would have me whistlin Dixie. They thought wrong. I'm not stupid, I know what I'm worth and $30k aint it.

Since I didnt sign anything regarding this new position, my salary is still negotiatable (sp), per HR.

"hey, bossman...i got my paycheck and noticed that the amount that it was was severely under the normal pay for this position. i assume that there was some type of clerical error........."

What will you do if they don't give you the increase?

12-20-2005, 05:21 AM
Now the question T asks is a real one that you need to answer to yourself...but I think that the advise that Chey and Q gave ( some combination of those) will get you what you are looking for.... just like they acting like it is all good you can yank the chain and she what shakes out......

Good question Tee. IMMA QUIT!!!.....LMAO

Naw just playin...

Since I'm not getting an immediate increase, I'mma bust my ass for the next 6 months and get my raise. All I really wanted was answers to why I was getting the low end of the scale, to which I'm not as low as it could be. At least they know that I really wasn't in it for the money and that I really wanted to job. All pluses for me. No more complaints, just doing the work that guarantees me getting paid.

We talked yesterday, and that's what I was commenting on. No immediate raise, but I'm guarantee one in 6 months. So for the next 6 months, it's about bustin my butt and proving myself in this position. I still think it's wack, but I aint the right skin color and I understand that.

But this is the most insane shit I've ever heard of...

Who accepts a job w/ no specified salary? And although I understand why they didn't mention it, why didn't you?

Now it is months later and when you had the "raise" discussion you didn't specify how much of a raise? or When the next raise after that is? Girl, I'm not mad at them I'm mad at you. Not because of "the last girl made this so I should make that"...but because you are not about the business of business.

Why should you have to 'prove' yourself if they hired you for the position?

Quiet as it is kept, what someone else made has nothing to do with what you are offered, it is based on how much they budget for the job (which should be disclosed when you ask them in the interview), how much other who hold that job in your industry in your part of the country make (average which can be calculated w/ little to no research and how much experience you can bring to the table and frankly what you can negotiate from the Jump.

I hate to rain on your parade but I'm betting come next week you're going to be pissed because they tacked on another $64.00 pay onto your check and it won't be their fault at all, it will be yours.

wow

Added....even if you find another job tomorrow you have already screwed up how much the next job will offer you because you settled for a salary only $2K more than what you made prior to this job. Sounds crazy but many companies base their decisions on this. I

n addition, increases are in percentages not straight dollar amounts. When negotiating your increase should be no lower than cost of living 4% and then tack on 'bonus' or performance percentage to make your salary more in line w/ others in that position... i.e. 4% + 12% = 16% or 34,800/yr. Hell if you were smart you would ask them to provide a written agreement that states: A review will occur 6 months from today to bring your pay in line and then all reviews are 1 year from your initial hire date at a rate of once a year with minimum increase of 4% so you don't get ganked like you did this last time. You have to learn to grab respect, it is never handed to you.

I appreciate what you're saying Iris. Life is about learning lessons and this one I will take away valuable lessons from it.

When I took it to my boss months ago, I was guranteed a 5% increase. What that adds up to is what I'm waiting to see next pay check. If I were to leave it wouldn't be just because of the money, more factors like being micro-managed come into play.

But again, I appreciate what you're saying, I am the one to blame for not standing up for what I wanted and having to play the waiting game with these mofos.

You know first comes the feeling of being blessed that you are able to know these things and then comes the humbleness that maybe everyone doesn't.

I really wish I could hear your voice - because I am hoping that I am just misreading the tone of the things you type and that in reality there is a very nice soothing voice attached to your stuff.

But again, I appreciate what you're saying, I am the one to blame for not standing up for what I wanted and having to play the waiting game with these mofos.

We've all put trust in companies and lived to regret it, but at least you have the 5% (which is 1500), It isn't a lot but it is a start, see if you can't get him to commit to another review in 6 months (from the date of this last review) for 8-10% That would add another 3,000 and you would be closer to 35K... still a bargain for them but more fair for you.

(that way assuming it would take you a few months to find another job, you could know that by Feb with your new salary you have more power to negotiate with....Iris' rule for negotiating, don't settle for less than a 10% increase when switching jobs unless the location or perks are so good that you are willing to accept less $ as a trade off)

Good luck.

that reminds me of a funny story.

i used to intern for the criminal investigation division of the IRS. the agents carried guns as they were authorized to arrest. we were on the second floor of a fours story building. on the first floor was a small public IRS office for forms etc. on the third floor was the FBI and on the fourth floor was the ATF. everyone carried a gun that mofo except the receptionists. you could walk up to the 2nd floor but to get into the actual offices you had to scan in. but there was one public restroom that was right off the hallway and didnt need clearance to get into. so one day we are at work and we hear all this fucking commotion outside in the stairwell. we all run out to see a dude in a dress running down the stairs and outside.

turns out this guy dressed up in a dresss, went into the ladies room and put a small camera in a purse which he sat on the floor between stalls trying to film the woman in the next fucking stall.

she started screaming and the chase ensued. they caught him in the parking lot and this fool started crying talking about his wife and kids were going to be upset if he got arrested. uh dude maybe you wanted to think about them before this all went down.

we had quite the laugh about that. i mean of all the fucking buildings to pick on route one this dumb ass picks a building that is overflowing with federal agents. lawd have mercy. i wonder whatever happened to his silly ass.
