View Full Version : Why do we as a people need the almighty crackers' permission........
to take a day off for something we believe in???
The Jews don't give a danm if they are getting paid or not when they have a holiday, regardless if you know about it or not, their kids don't go to school, they don't come to work, and will tell you that they are leaving before sun down regardless of what you got planned. In other words your shit don't count.
Now when it comes to my people, they can't do jack until the almighty cracker gives them permission.
Are we still SLAVES???
I had to get that out, I get like this every year around this time......

I observe Martin and Malcom's birthday like I do my own & my son's. When I worked in corporate america, I just let them know str8t up that work won't see my face on those days. Never had a problem. I think that when you ask, then you give them the power to say "No." But if you state it as fact, then it simply is. (sometimes - I know this doesn't work for everyone)

CD, you are so right...and the JEWS don't have a gov't holiday off but they take there day anyway.
I have sent out things about meetings and at one time, one fell on a Jewish holiday, you know they have a few, anyway, one of the professors wrote back and said he would not be here because of his religion, do you know i had to change the netire meeting date 3 times because of that....he is one person out of 30, and damn near demanded it be changed....i was like whatever.
Now why is it we don't actually have the 15th off and have 3rd Monday off.

I agree with you CD and yes I do believe that we are still enslaved. It's still physical to some extent, but it's more mental than anything.
I do have a question for y'all. How can we help our people to be more knowledgable and proud of our heritage as the Jewish people you mentioned as well as other cultures? Or better yet, what will it take to make YOU more motivated to be more knowledgable and proud of your heritage? Will you pass that on to others or keep it to yourself?

i don't get my birthday off...why do i NEED to get off mlk's birthday? or G washington's birthday? or presidents day?
christmas is religious so...give me that day....but....why get off at all to celebrate another person's birthday?

I don't get my birthday off either, but I take it off anyway. Why? Because it is a special day....the day I was born. What do I do with that day? Well, I don't get into the pomp and circumstance, but I do things that I like to do on that day.
Like I said in the other thread, I feel that by celebrating days related to our heritage is the least I can do for the suffering and trials that my ancestors went through. Why should I forget about these people or what they've done? Sure, things for us (blacks) still isn't great, but their efforts have brought us further than where we were. And for that I'm grateful and will celebrate. Not because anyone is telling me to or giving me a day off or anything like that, but again, because it's the least I can do. And yes, that should be something done everyday and not just on a holiday, but just like a baby learning to walk, I have to take it step by step.

that what has brought us to this point as a people is not what is needed to take us further and beyond. The current mind set of my people must die off and give way to a new type of mind set.
The days of marching and protesting has come to and ebb IMO.
I say that to note whenever you see other non black folks doing what black folks do, the shit its old and played. Its time for something new and dynamic. Something that the almighty cracker don't have a defense for, and by the time he gets hip we got what we wanted out of the deal.

But don't you think in order to move ahead you do have to also consider where you've been? And if marching and protesting isn't the way, than please share your thoughts on what should be the way.

who will use the day off....to do something for the community?
DC people....call me...i'll give u details about an event called WE FEED OUR PEOPLE in DC that day.....
let's go feed and cloth the needy. hell...u can ride with me if u like...
We need a political and economic agenda that includes all black folks. That democrate and republican stuff is just the devils way of getting you to take your eyes off the prize.
We can start with a unified black out day (just brain storming a bit) to show that we can all come to gether with one mind. That will scare the cowboy shit out of white america. No black folks anyware for a day. Keep your black butt home. (Wow! it just a pipe dream, we can't even take off MLK unless we get paid)
The problem we would have is you are going to get some danm turncoats to publicly try to get the almighty crackers attention and try to explain to him what we are doing when in fact the purpose would be to show that we don't give a shit about his attention.
If we could just come together on one simple thing, then we could use that joint mind set to move our black nation into a direction the behoves us and not some political party...

Que - I will be as active in my community on MLK day as I am everyday. It's 365 for me and I'm constantly trying to pull others in with me. I don't look at being off that day as a birthday celebration but as 14Kblaqwmn noted, I view it as a day to recognize his accomplishments and participate in furthering the dream.
CD - the inified black out day is a great idea - wouldn't hurt to get it started - everything starts with a few...

I don't understand. MLK day is a national holiday just like President's day or Memorial day, so why are some businesses still open? I did just like last year: I told my boss I am NOT coming in on MLK day, and he complied. I am at one of the few companies where we do get birthdays off, so that's not an issue with me. Well, there are no holidays in August so, why not treat my birthday as one?
Don't we have Black Solidarity Day the first or second Monday in November. I know it's not an "official" holiday so to speak, but I remember not going to school on that day. Even a few years ago, in college, clubs would have events that are about celebrating African heritage. I think it would be an awesome idea if this was a holiday that everyone of African descent celebrate.
CD, your idea is a good one, too.

Sounds good CD. Will you implement this or help to lead this? If so, how can I help and be apart?

just reading this thread and the other thread got me to thinking...
i celebrate my black culture every damn day. i am raising my child to be a strong black man.
i am using the upbringing that i was taught to deal with the bs that comes my way, keep a job and strive to live right.
i am taking what little college education i got and expanding on it by reading black literature constantly.
i am encouragning my cousins to get off welfare and leave the no good trif men alone.
i am making sure my nephew grows to be a strong black man.
i am an example for my 10 year old niece who worships me.
i make sure that my god children are well taken care of so they mommas don't flip and trip.
i tell my momma thank you for getting a job in 1973 getting paid $300 a month AND STILL caring for me like she should.
i call my grand mother and tell her that i appreciate her raising 5 kids by herself when my grandfather left her and in-stilling in them the black power that they have (and it's powerful too).
i make sure that my 19 year old brotha stay on his toes and in the church.
i stand up for MY RIGHTS and MY BELIEFS in the job.
i cry when shit goes wrong and i laugh when i'm tickled pink.
i realize that in this day and age I AM doing what my ancestors WISHED they could have done, but, struggled so hard so that their decendants could have what ever lay available to them on the "other side" that they were not able to live to see.
i visit my "family home town" and stay TIGHT with my family so that when we are away from each other we can say that 90% of the whole clan (up in the high hundreds and counting) graduated from high school, finished some college, got jobs, taking care of the kids and PARTY HARD together.
i did that yesterday.
i did that today.
i will do it tomorrow.
i will do it on mlk's birthday.
and forever and ever more...til death becomes me.

Reach one Teach one!!!...that's all it takes...pass it on!!!!
Yes, I defintely honor the Good, Dr, Revrend KING, but I'm sure he'll be extremely happy knowing that black folks are spreading the LOVE and the message...whether it's in a assembled group or just one on one!!!!
Peace!!!

I hear ya Hula and I applaud what you're doing. For me, the things you mentioned are a given, but I want to do more to help our people to progress. I know there are plenty of organizations here in Atlanta for such developments it's just a matter of me making the effort to be apart and staying apart and encouraging others to try to make the same efforts.

All I can think of is: You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
I don't know if you can help someone progress with out first the person wanting to progress. Its a sad reality that most black folks an't interested in progressing. Yes, that sound messed up, but IMO the average black person don't want jack shit. Yeah they say they want this and that until they got to do something to get it.
