Wasn't Toby supposed to be a dog, or a pet or something?

There was a couple other songs out that sung like it was a lost love, but the words were a little off?

Like Barry Manilow's Mandy, or the O'Jay's "Brandy"...
I think Manilow still plays like it may or may not be, as though anybody cares at this point.
