Alicia Keys...claiming Neo Soul?

Fam, I was just reading an article about "Neo Soul" and in the story Alicia Keys was mentioned a few times.

Now, I like her music, but I do not consider it "Neo Soul", do you? I mean to me "Neo Soul" is: Jill Scott, Maxwell, Badu, Musiq Soulchild, India.Aire, Bilal...etc...right?

I would say that she is more Hip Hop Soul like: Mary J Blige, Faith, Missy Elliott, Sunshine Anderson, Blu Cantrell..

"Neo Soul", to me is more of an artist who brings VIBE to the music.

To me, these ladies are more Neo Soul than Alicia Keys..

You know what Que? I can't really define it. It's an assumed style, feeling or state of mind.

People VIBE with eachother and Music can have a certain VIBE.

Black folks kinda just know what ya mean when you say Vibe or Vibbin' in the context of a sentence.

Well, this is my opinion/definition on it...just don't feel that Miss Keys' music is Neo Soul..

You have to remember that you are listening with a writer/musician's ear and you have a more defined knowledge of what goes into what category.

I don't consider her Neo Soul either...although I do love her music. I would put her more with Hip Hop soul as well.

Can a person have the ability to write various generes of music without being identified as a person/group as that genere and simply called: a musician?

This is all elementary folks...if we break up the two words: NEO, meaning New, and Soul, which i will loosely translate as something deep within you, and we add the word music, then, we come up with "new music (from) within", right?

I think that even Mary and Blu and a few others could have been categorized as Neo Soul (especially mary back in her beginning days). But instead, they called her music: NEW JACK SWING, now WTF is that? And why don't anyone use that catch phrase any more?

I think, from a music theoritical p.o.v., we will first have to understand the theory behind how r&b music is written...and then...define how hip hop is written (do anyone have lead sheets for DMX's stuff arranged for piano? who knows...can Jay Z spell his shit out on a lead sheet, have Quincy Jones arrange it for a a 40 piece orchestra and get some wearetheworld shit going on here?)

Why can't we just call all these cats (sans the hip hop clan) R&B artists?

Oh that's right....because...some of them ain't got no rythm and half of them probably don't even know what the blues are....

All these questions are rhetorical, but I asked them to say this:

Yes, she is Neo Soul! :D But she (and others) are R&B to me...

1. Mary has and always will be the "Queen of Hip Hop Soul". Even Aretha Franklin calls her that.

2. New jack swing= The entire Teddy Riley Camp, BBD, and some other cats, i have forgotten..

3. Neo Sould will never get a Grammy category..just like Hip Hop will never get one...they call it Rap and Neo Soul will be called R&B...
