Okay, as I stated before I made the conscious decision of letting my hair grow. In it's wet/slightly textured state, the longest length in back is around an inch or so past my shoulder but I've got some new growth so when it's flat-ironed a bit longer. I think I am going to set the goal of letting it grow to mid-back/bra-strap length and I think that should be by next year.

In this quest some things have escaped my bank of knowledge and I realize that I'm actually clueless or it's escaped me because of going to the hairdresser and therefore, not having to do it myself.

So, I will commence with the questions and those who have input please share.

1. What are a good collection of brushes?

I just recently broke down and bought some new and appropriate brushes. . .or so I think. They are boars bristle and very strong but soft. I never let my hair get long enough to where I couldn't smooth it down with a toothbrush or the palms of my hands.

The ones I already had included a bunch of vent brushes, round styling brush and a wide paddle brush. . .most of these were/are to be used in conjunction with a hair dryer because they are ball-tipped and wideset bristle.

The two brushed I bought are medium width, one square and one narrow with a more oval head because as I'm brushing around my hairline in the front I've been know to hit myself in the face/eye. . .hahahaha, I told ya'll I forgot some things and brushing in a calm fashion is one of them.

2. What is the proper rundown of washing your hair and the order in which to use conditioners, etc.?

3. On the subject of Hot Oil Treatments

What's the frequency and once again do you incorporate these with your hair washing or do you do them as needed. I do and have done both of them, depending upon how lazy I am on the given day.

and while we're on the subject of hair and tips, I need tips on how to do chirren hair cause Nya's hair is getting too long for the afro and head band and every time I try to do something to her hair it looks a hot mess. Are there any sites for black babies and hair care?

texas...for me, i never used grease on my daughters hair, therefore her hair texture never changed. Its still silky and soft and grew too doggone long. its mid back when braided now. Anyway, stop the headbands, they will eventually pull out her hair and just use bowrettes. Make her a few pony's and keep her hair clean. Thats all I can suggest.

Brite, i've heard vitamine E helps grow long healthy hair.

I just cut my hair on Saturday. I couldn't help it. So now, I will be going to get it done every week. I like the idea of having a professional do my hair every week...Saves me the drama!

Getting your hair cut is so addictive. I too just love going to get my hair done. Besides I've gotten lazy and will pay someone to do it, rather than do it myself.

i wish i had a 1 on 1 beautician, cause the wait gets the best of me, so I stays out plus after my last 2 haircuts from a 'professional' I have a phobia of hair dressers.

I read up and did my own hair for years, even putting in tracks if I wanted some highlights.

Now that I have been wearing it short for a year - I can't figure out why I wasn't going to the hairdresser to begin with, lol lol

I hate the wait and having to track her down half the time because she's involved in so many other endeavors, but I quite enjoy getting my hair done. When it was long I liked the home grown look but short I want my do did.

It's a commitment and I have not missed a two week appt. in a year now. I also like the fellowship that I get there. I see these sistas every two weeks and we catch up etc. etc.

I now do flyers and what not for my hair dresser in exchange for wash and sets - - so it's a win win situation.

People are always complimenting me on my hair, so I send clients her way. She gives me discounts for the help. You are right when you say it's a committment, cause I've spent more money in the last two years on my hair than I did the first 20.

Man, I found the perfect hairdresser. She is in a Vietnamese Salon! She is black though...I can afford to go every week cause I still spend less in a month than what I spend in 2 weeks at a black salon. Shit, I be giddy as hell!

I used to go weekly (Thurs.) and that's expensive and even then I'd be washing my hair again on Sunday or Monday. And given that my hair grows just fine on it's own, I just don't see that they are working any miracles with my 'do.

Also, I don't like a lot of product in my hair and I don't like most of the styles so it ends up not being a good investment for me.

Maybe when my daughter's gone (or I get a man to finance it) I'll go back to being a diva.

20 bones isn't bad for just a wash/curl. . .I remember when it used to be $16 those days are long gone. . .lol.

The last cut I got was $45 and relaxer w/conditioners are usually $55-$60 (I'll have an exact quote after I make my next appointment).

I have to pack lunch for like two months to get over the shock of that. . .I really just don't get the astronomical prices.

After a year with the same sista I am paying:

$5.00 for a half relaxer
$5.00 for my brows
$35 for a wash and set and trim (to keep it short)
$55-$80 for full relaxer or color update w/eyebrows

The shit is EXPENSIVE in my book!!!

That's part of the reason I stopped getting color and I don't do the at home coloring thing aside from a mild refresher of temp color or that spray can shit. . .remember that. I think I still have some on the floor of my bathroom closet (which I'm cleaning out).

If it's not dried out I will give myself a splash of color like the Deele, Ready for the World or whoever that was. . .lol

Just this Friday, went for my bi-monthly appointment. Paid $60 (35 wash/set, 15 trim, 15 highlights). Now, I don't usually spend this much. Now I'm broke, but my hair looks good!

Mane & Tale is a pretty good problem..only complaint is that it can be quiet heavy on the hair as it was originally formulated for the Tale and Mane of a horse.

Yes. I used to use this way back in the day. IMO it was horrible. Dried out MY hair. But several of the ladies of the hair board swear by this stuff. My advice, buy a small bottle.

From what I am gathering from some testimonials is that this is an occasional product and one you use when you won't necessarily be trying to style your hair (i.e. -- use it once every month-month & half on an inbetween appts. hair week.)

I think I also saw mention of watering it down so it's not as concentrated?

What was the regime you were using? And do you think it was one more than the other? The shampoo or conditioner?

From reading it "claims" not to strip the hair oils.

From reading it "claims" not to strip the hair oils. You got me. When I say way back in the day I mean WAY back in the day at least 14 or so years.

But I can tell you that it was the conditioner that I had a problem with. Maybe they've changed the formula since, but back then yuck. My hair is on the fine & dense side, so maybe that has something to do with it as well.

I've used the carrot as a part greaser and around the edges (didn't want my whole head smelling like that oil)

http://store1.yimg.com/I/yhst-1280598563728_1839_109969890

I've used the olive oil all over my head for those 2 weeks before the perm where my hair won't lay down flat through a pony tail cause of the new growth. PLUS, its good to use the night before i wash my hair so that the oil can penetrate and protect my scalp before a perm.

Slight allergic reaction?!?!?!?

Is Sulfur used to treat dandruff or dry scalp? I know it stinks so that would detract from my likelihood of using anything with that scent.

I keep thinking about this product called Sulfur 8 from when I was growing up. I've only sparingly used it when my scalp got dried out.

It's certainly not as fragrant as some hair products can be with announcing their use. . .I can tell some Blue Magic, TCB and Ultra Sheen like you wouldn't believe. . .even if I still use some. . .I have to 'cut' it with some type of oil.

I like both of these and they have some of the same oils in them so they are pretty much interchangeable in my unprofessional vision. . .lol.

I pour a couple dollops in my hand and finger-comb through my curls to keep them looking a little shiny.

I started using Shapleys MTG grown in mid-summer about 2 weeks prior to getting micros. Can't say if there was any results as I didnt pay much attention, but soon as I take micros out I will start again.

Surge 14 Revitalizer is a good product, now this Stuff WORKS. I used this everynight on my scalp only... it will cause breakage and split ends if you used on your ends of your hair. I had a thinning area in the back and hair grew back in 2 weeks. I buy it in the asian Beauty Supply stores. The oil is good too.

That's exactly what the Shapleys MTG smells like old school Sulfur -8 in the brown jar with the yellow paper. Sulfur is used to treat Dandruff. I remember my mom using this stuff called Glover's man Shampoo back in the day it was a black tar shampoo for sever scalp itch.

I remember Glover's Mane. I was rooting around under my sink and found some hair products with sulfur in them. . .I am wondering WTF I was thinking because my hair really isn't dry.

Is there some other reason to be using this? Hair growth? WTH do I be on sometimes, I just buy shit to be buying it.
