I am getting a computer this weekend and I want to get the access so I do not have to get a new line and I can be online and still talk on the phone. How does this work and how do I get it?!?!?!?

DSL is the way to go......
there are different speeds and you pay accordingly for the speed....
you dont have to get a new line either..your current phone line will become you conduit to the internet....while you talk on the phone at the same time...that is my home setup as well....
talk to your local phone company.....I think all the Bells have this service....

Bellsouth has it here for like $45.00 a month. Is that too high?!?!!?

Personally I think that is an average price......
you may be able to get it lower due to promotionals.....

That due to the @home situation Bellsouth is running a special on the DSL service for 19.99/month. You may want to ask about that.
I have the cable modem and I prefer it to the DSL however again due to the @home situation it may not be available everywhere. Then again you are in the ATL...I'm sure it's available there.

The cable company (Time Warner) offers it here if you already have cable and they're running a 3 mos. special for $19.99. I think I may do that. . .the monthly cost is in the $40's though.

I understand that Que, but not everyone was so lucky with the @home situation. Alot of area have no service...or limited service....or bad service.
I work for a phone company but we don't offer DSL, however we got plenty of calls from people wanting it due to the @home situation in their areas. We were sending them to Bellsouth if that was their local provider...also AOL now offers a DSL program. (My company is a division of AOL long distance but I hate them too) LOL

Honestly Soft, I'd see if you have the cable modem option in your area. I tried the Bellsouth DSL for a minute and didn't like it at all. I noticed some hidden fees on my bill not to mention that I really didn't see much difference in speed.
If you still want to try Bellsouth, the plan right now is $49.95/mo. and you get the free software and hardware so long as you keep the plan for 1 year.

that what we have in our area. It's really fast, but I heard it's a little expensive i our area. Luck for us(stalker) Our job allows us to to run our connect through our job main frame, which is fast and free!!!

I got shut down with @Home. I have to wait for the second modem. I don't mind because since they use Dynamic IP's.. I can hook my modem into the uplink and run my network without a server. Frees up a PC and I don't have to tell my niece to reboot please.. because the gateway is in her room..
I didn't use not router...
Either way you go.. it's a few dollars more than having another line. Just get a firewall.. ZoneAlarms got free ones.
