I just bought an electric hot comb to do my daughter's hair for the Holiday.

I don't know how to do it really.

My mom used to hot comb my great-grandma's hair in the kitchen using an iron hot comb she heated on the stove. I never paid attention to what she put in it and she doesn't remember what the stuff was called.........I just know it was a pomade. My great-grandma's hair used to stay nice ...... and she didn't have relaxer in it.

I did my daughters hair and it came out cute, but not as flat and straight as I wanted. I put a pomade in her hair and did it section by section.

By the time I picked her up from her dad's house that same night, her hair was a mess ! She looked like some little cave baby ...... all she needed was a bone in her hair !

What did I do wrong !

Any tips ?

This is how her hair turned out......... cute but still a little poofy

(BTW : Her grandma made me put that slip under her dress. I drove me nuts all day knowing it showed!)

u might hate me for sayin this, but she is black, why do u want her hair to be bone straight? i think she is beautiful! Her hair was a mess afterwards cause maybe she slept on it, or humidity. Hot combin dont last a long time like a chemical process does. But i wouldn't "perm" her hair. At her age, poofy is pretty too! When its too straight, its more likely to break or become damaged. Thats just my two cents.

Electric combs just don't work as well as the good ole iron on the bare eye hot combs.

I agree with Jaila. I think that her hair is just fine and it doesn't need to be "bone straight". The hot comb is cool for that styling, but I think that it looks great the way it is. She is pretty young, so I hope that this does not get her into this "I want my hair straight" routine. It is a good opportunity to teach young black girls that their hair is beautiful...just the way it is.

(Anyway, the straight haired people are jumping around trying to make their hair more curley...lol)

This may also be true. The comb on the oven gets really really HOT.

Well it's not that I want it straight-straight........ I see a lot of kids with their hair done for special occasions and I wanted to give it a try. I also don't want to relax it......... I know that would kill her hair.

It was just a matter of hours when I picked her up and it was so messed up ?

I've seen other kids with their hair done and it looks so cute and stays more than a few hours ......... I was disappointed hers didn't stay.

Have you tried blowing it dry after washing with a hair dryer that has the brush on the end? If that doesn't have the desired effect then procede to using the hot comb?

I did actually.

We have the blow dryer that has the comb attachments and it got the curls out but it didn't have that "finished" look.

Then it isn't meant to be. It's kind of how Tracey Ross' (Girlfriends) hair never really gets bone straight. Without a relaxer, it won't get that way.

when you use a hot comb don't you have to make sure that the back part of the comb makes contact with the hair as you comb through it? you know what i mean?
so when you comb through you have to position the comb so that the part that connects to the teeth meets the hair as well.

i have one the those electric hotcombs too... had planned to use it in between relaxers... but it does ot work as well as the stove kind....

Did that too.

As I passsed it over her hair I tilted it back so the rounded back part also was against her hair........... especially at the root.

hmmm.. well i am not sure if it is better to use something that says it is for pressing hair... but you can probably pick something up at a beauty supply store...
i bet there is a difference..

if i had a daughter, i would be trying my damnest not to use a hot comb because the consistent maintenance is nerve wrecking!

my mom and grandmother just use regular grease, the comb and some fire and it was all good. test it on the top of the hair and if it was too hot, they let it cool for 30sec to a minute. but our hair can take some serious heat!

Jonjon your daughter looks so pretty in that picture. :upretty

Maybe the carrot oil wasn't strong enough?

I hear it's all in the flick of the wrist. I think Lovely said that here one time. Lovely was that you?

I don't really press hair but this is the little bit I know.
Anyway. You get you a really good pressing oil or pomade. Like Dudley's Creme Press, Ultra Sheen Creme Press (discontinued, but you can still find) or use a system like D. Lows or Lustrasilk (these work occasional users too).

Press the hair in small sections. You also could try wrap it to get it flatter after you press it.

Keep in mind that pressed hair can be damaged as well. Even when done once, so don't let the comb get too hot.

Thanks Mystkev........ she did look very cute that day !

I asked the lady that worked at beauty supply store what they had for hot combing hair ...... she had no idea.

If I try this again it won't be until Christmas.

By then maybe I'll have a chance to go black hair shop where the people who work there are a little bit more "experience" on hot combing.
