I always thought that everyone is allowed to have some luxuries. Outside of a car or home and other objects (that's another thread):
what's the most expensive clothing or personal item or accessory you wear you've purchased (including purses)? (either as a set or individual pieces)
how much did it cost?
do you still wear/use it?

I'd have to say a heavy suede coat i purchased over 10 years ago. Cost me about $450 and is well worth it.
The coat is very warm, and very heavy......even the hood is heavy. Yes i still wear it.
I would say the next thing would be a coach purse.

The most and only expensive peice of anything that I own clothing/accessory wise is my Louis Vuitton duffel. It was a gift from my parents. Of course I still use it... Most of the trips I go on are 2-3 days so I can fit everything in it. Can't strut in the airport with mix-match shit... lol One day maybe I can afford to buy the rolling case :upretty

I'm a little too cheap, thrifty, whatever you wanna call it.
I'm more prone to telling you what something SHOULD'VE cost and what I managed to snag it on sale for. . .
I'd have to say a couple hundred on jewelry is probably the most I'm willing to go all out on because I see that as investment or something that you could reset the stone to update it, etc.

I've never been into those types of luxuries.
I'm too fickle. I can't pay $500 for a dress I'll be bored with next week. lol
My ex used to buy me expensive things...until he realized I treated the diamond cut earrings the same as the gold plated ones. lol :p

Now if you wanna know about some STEALS that I got and what not sure, I got tons of stories, lol
Currently I"m carrying a hundred plus coach bag w/matching wallet but it was a gift sooo....and it just doesn't hold that kinda importance to me.

I guess my wedding band set and tennis bracelet would count, but the only reason i have them is cause daddy brought them. He paid over 4G's for the two of them. I would never pay that kinda of money for a bracelet....hell a ring either for that matter.....

this is the first time spending this kind of money on a purse, but it was easier than i thought. i'm glad i bought it.

My wedding set, tennis bracelet, diamond earrings...cost a grip and I damn near choked each time I got them as a gift.
My parents bought me a Coach Attache case when I graduated from college. I am a known shoe whore and have been known to convince my momma to buy a pair of 500 dolla shoes for me. When I buy my own stuff, it is usually around 200 - 300 or so. Every year, for years now, I have had my military ball gowns made and they would range from about 300 - 500 a piece. I buy a lot on sale and I get a lot from my mother (matter of fact, I am scheming on her unused Luis Vuitton luggage right now for an upcoming trip).

OK....I spent $159.99 on my 20th year reunion dress. It's really cute, I'm gonna get it cut to a nice cutie shorter dress (yea right that's what we all say, lol)
I've never spent over $40 for shoes and over $59.99 for boots and over $39.99 for a pocketbook. My Prada cost $3.95 from Salvation Army, My coach was $39.99 from the Consignment Shop.

No I honestly haven't.
I borrowed my prom dress from my aunt (who paid $350.00) for it. I gave it right back after the prom. My aunt had closets full of ball gowns, fur coats, jewelry. And never went anywhere in them.
She had the collection of $200 church lady hats, the 3 piece ladies suits, and my little cousins were always dressed in those frilly $300 dollar dresses, tights, and patent leather shoes.
I always knew anything I wanted I could get out of her closet, and when she died a few years ago...I got every pair of her shoes cus my feet, my mom's and hers are the same size but my Mom doesn't wear heels.
But the rest of that stuff was not my style. My Mom got some of it, and my uncle's girlfriend has the rest.
Men's suits can be very expensive. My Dad buys my son's suits and I know he's paid over $200 for a few of them...but that's in the gift category and I don't do it.
Reason being he usually only wears the suit a few times, before he outgrows it. But my Dad likes to wear his suits and for my son to dress like him at times...so that's what they do.
And NO I do not, WILL not buy designer sneakers.
Ain't happening.

The tailor will only make 3 suits at a time and 6 shirts at a time so after two or three trips to him it adds up.
I work in an industry where you must look the part.
My manager who happens to be female and black only wears custom made suits, with a few sude ones for the holidays.
She well not hire a woman that is not very well dressed.

Over $50 yeah. My "interview" suit. It's a navy blue pinstriped pant suit. It was $59.99 at JC Penney. I only wear to job interviews and never anywhere else. I've had it 3 years.
But $75 to $100 on ONE ITEM...
Wait hold up...
Okay...my choir dress cost $175.00 for this choir I used to sing on. I didn't technically buy it, but I did the choir's anniversary booklet and rather than pay me they gave me my dress and $50.00.
And now that I'm thinking church my choir robe at the church I used to attend was $225.00 and I paid for that (Didn't have a choice)
But where I attend now the church buys the robes.

It's not the money Tastey, it's how the person views themself, if they don't think they deserve something then what make you think that you deserve it.

You are assuming that because I don't spend it on clothes and jewelry I don't think I'm worth the money.
I own my computer, my son's computer and I bought my Mom a computer.
I own every piece of furniture in my home because I bought it OUTRIGHT and never made payments on it.
I own my washer/dryer and had the landlord take his cus I bought it OUTRIGHT.
I own my JEEP cus I financed it for less than 2 years and paid if OFF early.
I'm worth ALOT but I don't think expensive clothes, pocketbooks, and jewelry are important.
But it has nothing to do with MY VALUE I just choose to splurge on things that will last rather than things that are faddish.
This thread is about clothes, jewelry, and things that don't matter to me but my money is spent on things I will have for years to come and they won't go out of style next year.
As a person who deals in money I'm surprised that you would advocate buying things that are not worth the money you paid for them 10 minutes after you leave the store OVER things that are.

I think it is like Brite is saying basically it boils down to priorities and preference.
I personally like to have nicer clothes and nicer household items, but I could give a good darn about a top of the line car. It also has a lot to do with your lifestyle (kind of like what CD was saying). Everybody does not put the same stock into things as others people do. If buying a portable DVD player makes one person happy, and buying shoes makes another happy and buying jewelery makes another happy, aren't they all being made happy and that is what matters? The gift you give yourself is the gift that matters to yourself the most.

Exactly! And clothes and jewelry don't fall into the important category in my life.
Because I won't keep it and I won't wear it, it's a waste of MY money.
Like I said if that's what someone feels is "splurging" on themselves that's cool but the last time I actually "splurged" I bought a new TV for my den, and an entertainment center, a new DVD player, and my son a new bedroom suit.
That was tax time last year. Tax time this year I paid bills, and put the rest in savings since I'm not working right now.
Yes I could have bought a $200 dollar purse or a $350.00 dollar coat but I don't see a reason to.

Right now it's shoes/boots. I have never bought more boots in one year than i have in this year.....
The closer it is to my body, then the more likely I'll spend. On the other hand the further away from my body the least likely I'll spend.
Now that excludes investments...
It should be made clear, how much something cost only comes into play when you don't have the money.
It's not prudent to splurge when you don't have your basic needs met.

BOOTS are IT for me this season. I have rocked so many pairs and I have really enjoyed wearing my boots, lol lol However, I have not paid hell this year over $10.00 for a pair, lol lol so in terms of expense - ahhhh.
Are you speaking in general on what I spend money on? Well because my weight fluctuates and I have a quirky sense of style to begin with and I've convinced myself (for whatever reason) that I just don't have the money for clothes - I'd rather spend my money on something that I get some 'pleasure' out of. Clothes don't present that to me. Electronics and things like that do. So I divert my money to that.
I was just telling someone that I was really feeling the new colors etc. and I couldn't wait to put me a LAYAWAY on at the WALMART, lol lol It just isn't that important like that for me.

Hmmm, I look a little harder of course at my daughters clothes cause she might be out riding her bike in them, lol
Now for me what the hell do I do? Put them on, if I think I look cute, assume the walk, tip toe into my office and sit in them ALL DAMN DAY. Come home, take them off and throw them over the 'weekly wardrobe' chair to be hung up on Friday evening, lol lol lol a $99 pair of pants to do that makes no sense to me. 2/$39.99 now that might work, lol lol
If my profession required 'bait' appearance or something then I would maybe spend more time.
However, I get things that can be washed and hung out if necessary. I get accessories and I make sure the whole ensemble looks nice and that shouldn't cost me a whole bunch of money.

How does everyone decide what is worth the expense?
I have a hard time with this myself.
For me it's a matter of "how long will it last"
Like I said I'm fickle. I might buy something this month wear it once, and never wear it again. So clothes don't fall into that category.
While in NYC I found some shoes and boots on sale for 3.99/pr at Fulton Mall. I bought 2 pairs of shoes and 2 pairs of boots. I wore one pair of the boots last weekend cus it was raining. The others are still in my suitcase. But since I didn't pay alot for them...it doesn't matter if I never wear them.
For computer, appliance, furniture. I'm going to spend alot to get the best cus I'm gonna have it a long time. Right now I have my eye on a bedroom suit that's 3 grand.
But when I buy it, I won't buy another one for LIFE. So it's worth the money to me.

I tend not to spend much money on clothes, especially seasonal stuff. But as far as my earrings go, I figured I worked hard in school, held down a job, paid my bills on time, why not spend some money on myself. What's the point of making money only to pay bills. Gotta treat yourself sometime. Also, diamonds are not something that will lose personal value over time. Clothes and shoes in my opinion do.
Also, diamonds are not something that will lose personal value over time.
Diamonds will not lose but may increase in value if they are certified by GIA.
If you like jewlary then the cheap stuff is like peeing out the window, it's a waste, better to spend the extra dollars to get the fine quaility jewelry which will not lose it's value.
If you can't do that, then costume is all ways available.

I've heard this train of thought before. . .it extends to the thread count of sheets you will sleep on, the weave/blend of the towels you will use on your body as well as toiletries, etc.
The flip side, is people who would use material things such as cars, electronics and other extensions to give them a sense of well-being.

I have an example about retailers and item costs. Okay I want these shoes http://www.zappos.com/images/227/7153227/1729-117538-d.jpg
I have the money for them, but they are $280. I just can't see myself spending $280 for some shoes.
What designer are those? Here are some similar by Steve Madden at < 1/3 of the cost: $80 at Nordies in black, champagne & green(NORDSTROMS)

As far as what I would pay on something. . .if it's trendy like I would consider that style of shoe I would spend the bigger bucks on it but if it were a more traditional style or something like crocodile, etc. I'd see spending more.
