i went into david's bridal in pinole this weekend and noticed they were hiring for bridal consultants. i took an app and got all geeked out about it! i felt like that would be a dream job! but two things happened: the manager told me the job starts at 10 bucks an hour and she was rude and nasty.
even though she left a bad taste in my mouth for working in HER store... i am still dreaming about the job even til this morning.now i understand what it feels like for folks to leave high paying jobs to do what they love.
i don't know about the pay cut, and i know i would have to aim for management position just to get to a little bit of money. i'm quite tempted to leave the job i hate for a job that i just may love.
My search for the job i love continues on...
Signed, Conflicted Hula in San Francisco (!!! lol !!!)

good suggestion....
because of the nature of that line of business...you can do it ON THE SIDE....to see if it is something you truly love....
then....
the more clients you get....you will then be able to cut your day job.

ive been leaning towards that on a business idea i have in my head.
ive been putting it off cause i want to get most of my schooling done beforehand.
BUT...i need 1,000 extra dollars by sept..and im thinking i might just go for it.

Off topic, but hey, it's me....
Revenge is a bitch on the internet. Go to those wedding forums and put that store on there in a review. No excuse to being in that business and doing exactly the opposite to what is good or business. They never learn until it affects the bottom line.

In a David's Bridal store what they call "wedding consultants" is nothing more than a sales clerk who helps women try on wedding dresses all day. I've done secret shopper for them and RUDENESS is the name of the game it seems.
I've done both stores in my area and have YET to meet a person who is nice and cordial and HELPFUL.
They seemed to be stressed, and didn't want to do much of anything.
For TRUE Bridal consulting, you'd be better off doing it free-lance.
Getting started is simple. Make up some business cards and leave them in stores that brides visit (dress shops, florist, bakeries)

what i percieve that i like about 'this' kind of job is helping a bride or teen go shopping for a happy moment. it wouldn't be just about the dress but the whole experience. everyone loves to brag about their wedding or prom, or tell their 'stories' either bad or good.
what i hate about my current job... dealing with the sales people in my department. BLAH... i never liked radio sales anyways and the bad attitudes that come with it. (but when you hate something, that's when you're damn good at it... odd).
i had thought about being a private consultant (part time or full time) for years because i've helped many a bride friends. I have done my research at the library, figured out how to get paid, etc, and it would be a thing where i would have to support myself for a good 6 months to a year before a check comes through, AND, i'd have to have at least three weddings a month set up to really bring in some good money. it is a job that takes up a lot of time and you do have to work part time days/nights to do it just so you can establish relationships in the business.
the truth of the matter is this: i don't have that entreprenuerial spirit to start my own business. (Brite I've been meaning to tell you that)... i'm sure someone will remove my african american card for not wanting to start a business like everyone else, or tell me i'm not motivated. honestly, i'd fail at it because i don't want the 'stuff' that comes with ownership. i just feel i can RUN something already established BETTER than i can owning it. i know my place, and owning a business ISN'T it.
(here comes the part where everyone tries to convince me otherwise...)

i can dig it...
i think that a lot of people try to form their own business and don't have the savvy, skill, OR desire to get it done SUCCESSFULLY....
anybody can go to their county office and get a DBA for 20 bucks or less........
realizing ones own limitations is admirable.

So I've been exploring this again and tempation is even in our career minds!
I told another professional that I was looking and she keeps giving me job lead for OTHER jobs in sales. I am tempted to leave because the recommendation for good pay or better location or a great manager is tempting... however... i don't want to be in sales anymore. I've even tried to make exceptions... like
if the sales staff was less than 4 sales people and one manager
or
if it was in my county with the same pay and same work level and people
the whole point of me leaving is not because of the 'people' per se, or the work, but, the miserabilities that come with this position that is a direct result of the rudeness of the people between 8am - 5pm chasing after money and getting on MY nerves about it.
so i am being tempted to jump out the frying pan into the fire, which is what i did when i accepted my current job and i'm being emotionally burnt as a result of it.
SO... I started reviewing again my past jobs to see what i enjoyed the most...
working at the library
working at an amusement park
as well as other areas i've missed my calling
travel agent. though the field is almost obsolete the exception is working for CSAA or a large travel company that sell their own product like disney travel or a cruise line or a resort in some areas of SELLING A TRAVEL EXPERIENCE.
i like that i'm consistently being pointed in the direction of counseling (aka applied psychology) ... i am coming across info in the field and its driving my inner career child to act on it. so i believe i'm on the right path there.
but the day to day jobby job til i GET there... i continue to explore.
so to start off: i joined salary.com. good stuff... plenty of job descriptions to help me find my 9-5 calling lol
