LL Cool J Suing Owners Of Fubu

LL Cool J and Fubu are going to court.

A lawsuit filed with the New York County Supreme Court by LL, born James Todd Smith, claims that the owners failed to adequately compensate him for endorsing the clothing line and helping sell hundreds of millions of dollars worth of clothes.

Fubu was founded in 1992 by CEO Daymond John in Hollis, Queens. John started selling the company’s first tie-up hats, then a fashion trend popular in hip-hop circles and quickly realized he was on to something.

John took out a $100,000 loan against his house and started producing the clothing line with partners Carl Brown, J. Alexander Martin and Keith Perrin.

In 1993, the owners convinced LL Cool J, who is also from Hollis, to wear the fledgling clothing line.

By 1999 company revenues had reached over $200 million per-year and the company grossed an estimated $380 million dollars last year.

The rapper was prominently featured in the clothing line’s advertisements and frequently wore Fubu branded clothing.

LL was also featured on Fubu’s FB Entertainment release, The Good Life, which spawned the hit “Fatty Girl” the featured LL, Ludacris and Keith Murray.

LL, whose first venture into the clothing world was with a line in the mid-eighties called Troop, is also working on a clothing line, James Todd Smith.

In a previous interview with AllHipHop.com, the legendary rapper said the line is expected to include button ups, suits, t-shirts, jeans and “classy gear,” that will be sold in upscale clothing stores.

Fubu representatives were not available for comment as of press time.

Unless they entered into a contract with him, I say they don't owe him a dime. Black folk need to stop being so damn greedy. The success of their clothing line comes no where near the success of his albums, movies and other endorsements.

LL will win this battle! I'll tell you why....Def Jam, just gave him the publishing rights to all of his songs...his entire catalog. This means he has the loot of a P. Diddy, Master P, Baby and others that own their publishing.

Okay...in other words, his loot is longer and he can tie them up in court for years. No one will want that so FUBU will settle.

My only question is what took so long. LL hasn't repped FUBU in ages. He had to know he wasn't getting paid right back then. Right?

I agree with Admin...he'll get some compensation. He deserves it...he basically made that label. Cause they came STRONG when he started reppin them in the media. Coverage nobody can deny. The problem is WHY oh WHY (if you were FUBU) and your label stands for FOR US BY US, would you not kick the brother down with some of the profit? That seems more greedy then any amount that LL could sue for. FUBU will be the loser in the long run. They need to FIRE their business person. Never EVA EVA EVA EVA EVA start a beef with somebody with the potential to one day buy your company. And never bite the hand that feeds you cause you know what...one day that hand just might smack the shit outta ya.

Yeah, I can see that. You'll know he's really trying to go to war if you see an "LL Cool J Greatest Hits Vol. 1" cd pop up. He can rack up from not even doing any work. Not to mention he has his own clothing line about to drop. This actually could be perfect timing for him.
