Ok, last nite there was mention on the news of a storm that might be approaching cnotaining rain and with it being cold etc. It would mean we would get some icing and sleet.
This morning they were STILL talking about it and it was to begin moving slowly in from the West.
Well in Grand Atlanta Fashion - we have went on apocolypse alert! Which means everything in the city has shut down and we are panicking.
I went to the Thrift after work to get me some sweaters and they decide to close early (now there is not a drop of water anywhere). I then go to the grocery and lo and behold the cops etc. are out there directing traffic in the parking lot and they have put security guards at the check outs and lined us all up at the back of the strore and with 15 registers open and active they let us in about 2 per register at at time. Ain't no bread, milk, chips...or beer.
Same scenario at the liquor store up the street.
It's now 10:52 AND THERE IS STILL NOT A DROP OF WATER ON MY STREET!!!!!
Now I'm not saying that something might not go down tonite and we get up and overpasses etc. are slippery and because no one in Georgia slows down someone is not going to bust their ass - but Atlanta kills me everytime we get the hint of inclement weather. I fully expect all schools to be shut down on Monday for nothing, lol lol

It must be different in some parts of the city because I spoke with my "auntie" in Atlanta about 4pm and it was sleeting where she was...later tonite I spoke with another friend and it was freezing rain where he was.

Awww yes, my daughter has told me about that, how people in Atlanta totally panic over an inch of snow....she told me that when she would get into her car and take off, her friends would look at her like she was insane. Hey, an inch of snow is nothing!!! An ice storm is nothing!!! She is used to Illinois winter!

ok, it took me 30 freakin minutes to get my car out of the ice shell that had it stuck to my parkin spot, another 20 minutes to warm it up (after it was running while i chipped away at it), then i go to work and they close 10 min after i get there. now i lubs me a day off with pay, but damn! its not that serious!

That's really what I was talking about. The 'culture' about storms in some portions of the South. If you've lived anywhere else and looked at how they deal with it - it seems funny when you come back down south - that they panic the same as they did when I was little. I lived thru some NY Blizzards - so I still chuckle when we get something.
I heard the ping ping ping of the ice about 2am while I was dreaming about I needed someone to spoon with, lol This was perfect spooning weather, lol
So far our block is okay. I mean we won't ever get any assistance from a truck or anything but I live on a block where there are enough younger people with cars they will dig us a way, lol
I'm thinking of trudging out though because I want to get some Bisquik. I'm in the mood for some Chicken Pot Pie and I forgot the Bisquik. But maybe I'll just have it for Sunday dinner since we are suppose to get up in the 40's tomorrow.

That "we do it up North" all the time mentality has gotten folks killed down south.
I understand that many people up north were weened on driving in the snow and ice so it doesn't bother them, but that's not the South.
First of all in the South...especially NC/SC/GA there are HILLS...it's not flat. I have a friend who drives a 5- speed that was shocked at the number of hills and valleys that he had to manuever on in SC because it's not that way in the North. That's also what makes driving in bad weather MORE DIFFICULT down south.
Second of all in the South there are no snow plows, and sand trucks running to cover the entire city. Most cities in the South have a few, to clear MAJOR roads but NOTHING to clear side streets and rural areas (like where I live). That's where the major accidents occur. I'm sure I-85 has traffic running smoothly...but I-85 doesn't run through the city or to anyone's homes.
So yes if I lived in Manhattan and I could ride the Subway, or take a cab, or drive down a street behind a snow plow that had just cleared the way then I'd have no reason to worry about the snow.
But I don't. I live on a rural winding road that I would more than likely be killed if I tried to manuever out of it because no matter how bad it gets the snow plows are not coming back here.
So it's not an irrational thought to feel that people's safety and well being is better served by spending 2 days at home, than insisting that Northerners drive in it all the time "why can't we" and ending up killing someone or yourself.
I NEVER drive in it, and I have a 4 wheel drive Jeep. My life is not worth a job, or a loaf of bread.
When they start clearing the streets in SC like they do in NYC, or sending plows into the rural areas...then I'll think about it.
Or better yet when the people in NYC have a tornado sweep through lower Manhattan and don't PANIC...the we can compare notes. lol :p

Good post Tastey... the folks that think they can live in one region as they did in another are the ones getting jacked up.
This is the season for weird weather. I saw it was 40 degrees in Jacksonville Fla. WTF! What It's not enough to be in Florida, you have to be down south in Miami to ride out the winter in the 70s?

I talked with my friend again yesterday afternoon. He was out trying to find some dinner because of course as a native of Indiana he didn't stock up for the ice storm. lol :p
He called and I told him I was home making a big pot of beef stew, and cornbread. Chillin watching movies and reading. He was JEALOUS. lol
I told him that snow and ice for us Southerners is like an unscheduled holiday and we have our traditions.
You make sure you have food in the house, cus you might not get out for a few days. Have plenty of candles, and or batteries for the flash light in case you lose power. And logs for the fireplace if you have one, or extra blankets to keep warm. Some folks pull out their kerosene heaters but I hate those damn things.
Then if you got power, you make a big pot of beef stew, with cornbread, and let it simmer ALL DAY (cus you ain't going nowhere) and then just chill.
This is his first winter in Atlanta...he wasn't feeling it. So I told him "you a big bad northerner that can drive in anything. come up here and have dinner with us (me and my son) and chill.
needless to say he didn't try it. lol :p

Well it left GA and hit DC area last night at 7pm and it's still snowing at 1pm Sunday. I think the news was off with this one. They said snow was due to stop early sunday morning, not Sunday afternoon. Heck it might go to Sunday night, but who cares. Folks was packed in the stores last night. We went and got some movies, and then i stopped in Barefeet to look, wind up buying some more black boots...nice boots, about a 3 1/2 inch heel, cute buckle by the toe and 2 buckels on the side. Of course my daughter was like Ma, you already have like 5 pair of black boots.....i was like AND, they on sale $20...
Anyway, why the stores were so packed is beyond me....we had snow last weekend and they were packed......what happened to all the food....the city wasn't shut down, schools weren't closed...so what happened....folks just greedy!
Anyway, let it snow. i can do without the ice.
I think we have about 3-4 inches just from looking outside.....i'll send pictures tomorrow....
Made some friend potatoes and onions this morning...delicious.

Where we live, as I've said many times, it's a small town. We live outside of the actual city limits, so we don't ever see the plow or the salt trucks either. It's simple really. Buy snow tires and drive slower! Forgive me if I just don't see it as the big deal everyone else sees it as....if there are feet of snow on the ground, okay. But an inch or two? Please.

You know that was what I was thinking. Of course I dont' want people to go out and act like Ice does not kill etc. etc. and act a damn fool - but it's all the stuff around the actual weather that I was speaking on. The Human Nature factor as in the fact we tend to all panic at once, or we tend to not be prepared for impending disaster so we all get the bright idea at the same time etc. etc.
A plow has not been down my street either and won't be coming down my street and I am respectful of the message from God in the form of weather - but I still find it not such a big deal from my viewpoint and I enjoy the day off etc. but I still chuckle at us humans running around like Chicken Little and instead of finding 'solutions' since the weather isn't going anywhere - we repeat the same panic mode each time there is inclement weather.

last week we got a foot of snow where i am and my boss expected me to still come in to work. needless to say that did not happen.
as someone stated earlier. i am not about to risk life and limb to run off anywhere during weather conditions like that. the real funny part is that there were a number of dummies doing just that. the news was even telling everyone to stay home. imo, where the hell is someone going in a foot of snow anyway. unless it is a medical emergency it just is not that important.
