People used to eat peppermint sticks in pickles as well but we used to eat Now or Laters in our pickles and you're right, you could hardly see them damn pickles that juice was so foggy in that jar, and he was using some old ass fork out the kitchen for real - but you wanted that one on the bottom left, lol lol

Man to be a kid back then (cause I wouldn't be a kid for anything these days)

Do ya'll remember the wax lips and the wax soda bottles. :p

But my favorite candy was the necklace with the heart at the end. I don't what kind of candy it was made out of, but I used to wear it and play and eat, and sweat on it, and eat, and it had to nasty and dirty as shyt.

I can't believe my Momma used to let me do that.

LOL :p

Man we would leave the house and stop at the candy lady who lived about a block and half from teh school. She would make us come in three at a time because it was in her living room. I remember her soo damn well. She wore your typical southern housedress, her husbands slippers and a head rag.

You had to hold your bag while she filled it for you. You would only have like a quarter but you could get:

5 fu man chu gums (which basically broke all your teeth out)
enough shortbread cookies with the hole in the middle to fill your pinky finger
and one box of lemon heads

Or you would just wait till after school and get you a pickle for 15 cents and some now or lata's

In the summer she would sell those cones that you buy at the store for a nickle!

Used to? I still do when I can find 'em. Peanut butter and coconut - yum!

Those, lemonheads and sweet & sour suckers - the green & yellow ones were the best! Oh, and Lik-em-aid with the candy stick that you dipped in the grape and strawberry flavored powder! :p

I used to eat chick-o sticks just about everyday.

And Remi, you took me back with the Big Bol. I used to love those things.

I lived in a small town in Illinois, so we had a candy store on just about every block.

There was Miss Sally's which was just down the street from my house. We used to stop there to get Mary Jane's and Sally So Good potato chips.

There was the Corner Store which was ran by the Sanctified church ladies. They had the good stuff.

There was The Nelson's who were all sisters. It was about 3 of them. They could be kinda mean, but it didn't stop us from going in there. They made the best hamburgers, didn't have much candy.

There was Henry Baucum's grocery. Went in there to get the red sour candy. You know, the candy that's like hotamales, but are round and kinda sour.

Then our favorite was Solo Banks store. You could get just about everything in there. He was married to a german woman and they would get to arguing and she would be screaming in German and the son would be too. You could get pickles out the jar, pickled pig feet out the jar....yuk, any kinda candy you wanted, fiestas, cheese popcorn, bbq pototo chips, and all the candy's everyone else named. And get you a grape NeHi soda to top it all off. I would go to the store with .50 and get a bunch of stuff and still have change left over for another day.

There was also Fletcher's which was right across the street from the grade school. He did good business at lunch time.

Chick-o-sticks were gross! And that candy ring was nasty, not sweet at all. You better not try to wear it and takes sucks. It left you with ruby red lips. That ain't good!

Yo, I tried Chicko Sticks for the first time when I was 26. Not the best experience. It was worst than a damn butterfinger and stuck in my darn teeth. Thought i needed plyers to get that stuff out. I'll pass on it. It was more work than enjoyment for me.

It was kind of salty wasn't it? I'm trying to pull up sensory data from elementary school, and anything pre Jackson Five or Watergate is pretty much a haze...
I may have to go to that website that has all the old favorites. I was thinking of doing that before we outlawed candy orgies from our menus. But I have not seen it on retail shelves nearly ever since.
