How many times should a collection plate/bucket be passed around during a worship service?
A. Once -- put everything in one collection & divide it
B. Twice -- for the tithes/offerings & special needs
C. Three times -- for tithes/offerings, special needs & the spiritual leader

New Beginning Full Gospel Baptist Church said otherwise. While in Atlanta, my husband and I visited my old church, it happened to be my pastor's 31st anniversary preaching. They took the normal offering/tithes/building fund/ect.. then after the guest preacher Bishop Sherman Young spoke, he challenged the congregation to match his gift of $1000.00 to our pastor. First of all the way he went about it was tacky as hell " I am about to give Bishop Morton a check for $1000.00, all the men in the church that can match it, stand up" Okay, if you can give $500.00, $100.00, ect....went all the way down. Needless to say it ruined my husband's experience at my church( he really didn't care for it much to begin with). But I am all for giving for "special occasions" but it's all in the presentation. Don't challenge me or the congregation, and don't broadcast how much you are able to give..your check speaks for itself!

Once. Usually at most churches they have different envelopes for general offering, tithes, etc.

My church does a Benevolent offering before regular services start. I don't even know if they are still doing this. If I would get to church early enough I would know.
But we have one offering for everything after the sermon. You pay your tithes, building fund, general offering, love offering, etc then.

WE JUST DISCUSSED THIS AT OUR HUSH BIBLESTUDY THAT WE HAVE ON TUES AT 9pm est.
tithing and offering are separate. give back your 10% but offer what u can. and offering doesnt always mean money.

Correct, but we have one offering period with different envelopes for each. You just walk up with your many different envelopes and put them in the collection plates/bucket.

I believe that they should ask for what ever they can get. The church has many options. They can ask for a general fund and divide that money between all the programs that they run or they can separate the offerings. It's like the IRS except you know where your money is going.
I been to a church where the Bishop said loud and clear. If you aren't offering at least 25.00 keep it in your pocket. He knows for a fact that everyone was making at least 250.00 a week at their jobs. He broke it down to say that he knew they were spending at least that much a week on powerball and other lotteries and they gave resturants 15% tips on food items. So he didn't want their money. He also said for those that were unemployed to volunteer at the church because that is payment too...
He was funny. He said the youth church was putting on a play and it would cost $5000.00 so he asked 5 people with 1000 to step up and pay for it. When he got the 5 he closed the pot and moved on.
It depends. If you are new to the church you just ask someone how many offerings are asked so you can divi up your contribution. Don't matter anyhow.. it's tax deductible.

I don't think it really matters how many plates are passed or how many challenges are made. I've been to churches that did it so many different ways.
In alot of white churches here you can transfer the money directly from your account to the churches at an ATM like machine in the vestibule and no plate is passed.
I give as the spirit leads me whether that is money, time, or gifts. I don't allow what anyone else gives or challenges to influence mine because when it's all said and done I have to answer to God for Tastey and nobody else.

I don't see why the collection plate can't be passed around one time. This prancing up to the front of the church so that everyone can see who is giving and who isn't is ridiculous.
At my parents church, they publish how much person gives...broken down like this.
Name amount tithes mission building fund
Got to the point that people stopped putting their name on their envelopes...but guess what? They have numbers on the right hand corner, which are cross referenced to your name. So what you give is still known and published for the congregation to see.
When I used to go to church, I would send a check in the mail in the middle of the week. I would not participate in the madness.

Now that is one organized Church that they have the envelops numbered and know who has what number....
I also think that one collection plate is enough.... Put tithes in an envelop and then whatever offering you may give can go in the same plate....

My offering envelopes are numbered. So I guess that means I belong to a well organized church, huh?
Misha I feel ya on the "offering stroll". I don't participate in it either. I sit my ass up in the balcony where they pass the plate.

i prefer the plate not the stroll
i know we are to do so proudly, but, my goodness, how embarressing if i gave my mom and envelope to put in there for me, i sit down and wait and someone looks at me like i'm cheap.
but anways... i tithe my full 10%. i can't play catch up and i shall ask the lord to forgive me on that one. but, when i am there, its in.
my friend goes to a church where EVERY member is expected to tithe, and if you don't, you will get a talkin to privately. but they don't ask for NOTHING else in terms of money. if the church wants to do ANYTHING no matter which auxiliary or program or what ever, it comes out of the church fund and the Pastor believes that the Lord WILL blessed. Don't get greedy and ask for more.

...has 2 offerings...one for the benevolent offering, which is used for the sick and shut in members, or for members that may come to the church needing money for emergency situations....the other is the public offering, which takes care of the monthly bills, etc...our tithes are taken up during the public offering...when we have pastor's appreciation ceremony, people give what they can...ain't none of that matchin shit goin on....

We take up one offereing, unless there is a special program. Women's Day, Youth Day...things that take additonal offereing. But we have serveral envelopes so you can use one of them or you can put everything on this one enevelope...but normally once is enough for our service.
Now Sunday School, takes an offering too. So that could be two or three in a day, depending on if its a special program.

Twice. . .
Once for the Benevolent offering. . that's for the sick and shut in~!!
The other offering is for Tithes and general offering. . if you have tithes, you put them in the Tithe box and the general offering goes in the plate on the table~!! :)
That's enough~!!!!!!!!!!
(Note - our Church/Sunday School takes up one also)
