My daughter tags along to the hairdresser with me every two weeks and so of course they are itching to get up in her head cause she has so much.
currently our regime includes:
Washing and conditioning with Infusium for fine curly hair
Air drying
Light oil in the scalp
Wide tooth comb
Flat Wide Paddle brush
Sometimes a hot oil treatment
Ends clipped every 4-6 weeks by me using salon quality sissors
hair is all one length.
She's 11 and stands 4'2 1/2
Her hair is straight (on it's on) in the winter and curls up during the summer months.
My hairdresser said that by next year I should start letting her wash and do it and begin to 'train the curls' for the future.
I have not heard of this - so any hairdressers please educate me.
I DO NOT want any chemicals in her hair and MINIMUM heat ( as in sitting under the dryer - I don't want the comb run thru on the blow dryer).
She got years to ruin it herself, lol
P.S. for her birthday I did blow dry it on low and use the paddle brush to straighten it out a bit then I hot rollered it. That's about all she gets done as of now.

Well i can't say you shouldn't or should, i'm just saying you know best.
Right now my daughter goes to the hair dresser once a month, her sister braids it during this time, so when the braids come out, she's at the hairdresser.
Right now she's at this stage where she wants the back to hang......i'm like ok but all your hair won't be out. Our hairdresser told me it'll take some time to train her hair to curl but doing it like this will help. I'm cool with it, she's 12, but i will not have all her hair hanging out.

I've heard of training curls. If your hair is not curled on a regular basis it will have difficulty holding curls.
I have worn braids in one form or another for over 3 years and when my hair is out it WILL NOT curl. I can try rollers, hot curlers, gel, whatever and the curl will drop within a few moments.
Generally when I wear my own hair I just put it in a pony tail and let it go cus curling it is useless.
I think that may be what she means but you usually don't have to do that with a child's hair cus they are not gonna keep curls more than a day anyway.

Your defintion of child and mine are two different things. Children are different than they were long time ago. Like I said, my 11 year old is as tall as me and she does not look 11.
And when I started doing her hair, it stayed for longer than a day.
Not ever child is the same.

I wasn't defining a child at all or speaking of long ago.
I was just saying that training a curl is usually not neccessary for a child regardless of age.
If you choose to curl your child's hair and leave it longer than a day that's you. I didn't say anything was wrong with that or that this applied to every child.
Damn.

Just stating my PROFESSIONAL opinion,
Whats with all the damning?
I was stating the the child thing simply because of how children use to look when i was coming up at 11 and the way they look now. Must be the food.
You said its not use in curling a child's hair because it doesn't stay for longer than I day. I just simply stated that my daughters did.
Not your day today or something? Whats up?

I should ask you that.
I said I think and MAYBE cus I honestly don't know just adding to the discussion...it was all my UNprofessional opinion that had nothing to do with anything you said.
Maybe you need to reread what you said.

FoxE I'm only 5'2 1/2 so I have been getting her ready to be short, lol
I had never heard of this as well - her hair is naturally curly (here is a picture) and I believe she's just talking about training/taming this stuff on her head, lol I just don't see the need for HER to do it.
My daugher knows she won't be wearing her hair out for many years to come. Right now I make two little braids in the front and roll them up and she has these ringlets which she loves, lol
She also can take out her plaits and comb her hair out for me which saves MEGA TIME.

Girl her father had hair all over the place and back in my youth - I had quite a bit of hair, lol So she got it ALL, lol
To show you the difference, that was a summer picture here it is in the winter - so I think that I'm going to have to do something to get it to 'behave' just don't know what, lol

I've never heard of the term train the curl. I would have thought that it was as Tastey described.
But looking at your daughter's hair which is naturally curly I am thinking she meant defining the curls.
Your daughter reminds me of my step sister when she was around that age.

See,
Thats all I was trying to say.
My daughter is 11
5'5 and 150.
She don't look 12, do she, Tee?
NO....I have asked several folks to guess her age....they all say atleast 15, most say 16. Then they look at me and say, are you her mom, i say yes......well because you look young, i'll say she's about 13.
One guy told me my child needs to be on a poster board telling men this is what can send you to jail, can you guess why?

Pam, my daughter had that amount of hair at 5.....her hair was exactly like that, she now has a perm.
That picture, is that after the braids or after a wash?

The first one is after the braids were taken out. The second one is after her plait were taken down. It's those two textures. Right now it's almost straight like the last picture because the humidity has just about gone out the air.
I guess I'll just deal with the next step when it's time for the next step. though time consuming, I don't mind washing and taking care of it myself. I comb it two-three times a week. Wash it twice a month, lol it lays better if there is some 'dirt' in it,lol
I'll be taking these pictures down as well - don't like her floating all over the net - just wanted to try to show what I was talking about.

There were two girls at the party that were much taller than me, lol I was like Wow! One said she was 5'6, didn't run into any real chesty girls but there are some that go to her school.

my mom's hair is trained to hold a curl. she only has to comb or brush her hair without rolling it. but she puts an iron to it anyways.
my hair on the other hand seems to be where it doesn't want to keep a curl anymore. i just cut it and style it and it falls flat soon as i hit outside. as if getting older is changing my hair 'type'... :(

when i was in Jr Hi...back in the day lol,lol...to train..your hair cut, or curl...was keeping it in that style......Like Hula says a brush..a bump..or a push...and it's set...I would assume she's speaking from the professsional opinion...of holding a style......Pam..is your hairdresser "OLD SKOOL"......by that I mean..can she go anywhere......with no chemicals...just her curling irons, pressing comb..and stove...and make money$$$$

I'm a licensed cosmetologist....she is just trying to get your money.
Girl, continue to do what you have been doing to your daughters hair. The only thing that I would say is that you may want to trim (1/3 -1/2 of hair) her hair. Just make sure that you keep conditioning it like your're doing. Don't fall for that train your hair shit...you've been training her hair since you had her.
