my hairdresser was trying to figure out why i have hair breakage yet i have no split ends. After a few minutes, she asked me about my combing practices and other home care techniques i use. After I told her, she explained to me to use a brush that has the soft bristles like what the menfolk use to brush their waves. (i've been using a hard bristle brush for the past 15 years on my self, and who knows what my mom and grandmother used on my head as a kid). she said i need to stop brushing my scalp and toss that brush in the trash. that the naps aint go do nothing but snap back after that brush leaves my head!
She also said that with said soft bristle brush that i should brush my hair (not my scalp lol) every night and that in 30 days i will see an improvement with the softness and manageability of my hair.
out of all the hair dressers, she is the first one to tell me this
ladies, have you heard any of this?
What kind of brush do you use?

Lionel *two snaps and a circle* told me years ago to stop using hard bristle brushes, but there is something about digging in with a nice hard brush...whoo the way that feels on my scalp!!!
Mmmm hmmm, my hair broke off too after years of doing that. But since I have gone afro and stopped brushing my hair altogether? Grows like crazy now, that figures!!! The moment I decide to let it grow out and perm it? Lets see what happens!

I've never had a hairdresser tell me that, but I do know that those hard brushes pull and rip your hair. They say the best kind of brush is a boar's bristle brush.

I really don't use one. My hair is braided right now and before that, I was wearing an afro and didn't brush it. It grew fast too. Before that, I had a relaxer, but my hair was cut short and I didn't really need to brush it. If I did, I had a hard bristle brush. When my hair was long, I think I used a hard bristle brush and you do see much more breakage.

i love my scalp scraped/massaged (lol) so last night i got REALLY tempted! this will be a hard habit to break.
she even mentioned that black women in general don't brush their hair daily and don't know how beneficial it is to do so. if her hair is any testimony, she must be right. it was nice and short last year and its a cute neck length now and healthy! i need to look up some stuff on the net, but i be too busy!!!!!!

i think brushing will stimulate the scalps natural oils... and in turn make your hair softer/healthier. i never brush my hair because i hear it can be damaging.... i just massage my scalp... and give my hair a good daily comb threw... but never brush it.. probably why it is so dry...
i had read something about an "S" brush... anyone heard of that? supposed to be the very best for our hair. i can never find it at the beauty supply store.
i am going to get me a soft bristle brush and give it a try....

Brushing the hair, does help distribute the natural oils that we make (speaking thru my hairdresser, lol) However, there are really no brushes that are for 'us' per say. Boars Hair brushes are the best because they are of natural hair and thus 'breathe' whereas plastic does not. I can't use those for obvious reasons, lol
I currently use this little brush I found at the beauty supply store and it's so soft I don't think it's doing anything, lol
My daughter follows a more keebler routine because of her hair texture in that she uses the wide paddle brush with the separated tongs with the little balls on the end.
Back when I had hair I used to brush like just comb it out and brush from root to end about twice a week because my head tends to run dry (at the suggestion of hair dresser) and I guess it worked.
