Hey Peeps with spring coming I wanted to start looking around for something ELSE to eat, lol Food can get mighty boring sometimes.

I went to the Dr. and asked him about my 1 cup of coffee I've started drinking a day from the quiktrip and he was like actually it probably is doing you some good being diabetic and gave me this new study saying that Coffee was good for Type 2. I also ended up seeing the study on Web MD, so that's cool.

As well as I see that Muellers and another brand have now come out with this 1/2 the carb pasta. Now my eyebrow has raised because Ummm if you can come out with this now = why not before we all got fat and diabetic? I don't know how long this low carb craze is going to last, but I guess I should take advantage of it. I bought some spaghetti and tried it in some of my chili the other day and actually outside of tasting just a bit more 'cardboard' it wasn't bad at all. I like my pasta al dente so this was cool. They also have macaroni and I think something else. Next time I go to the grocery store I'll get a couple of boxes.

Nowadays I usually just don't buy pastas that have no portion control. I will get me some pasta in the frozen dinners like from Micheala (sp) and split that with my daugher, but they are so sodium heavy, but I'd rather do that tradeoff for portion control if I just need me some pasta.

As well as Orange Juice was a favorite of mines and with all the stuff that I do cheat and eat - I stay away from it because it really shoots my sugars up and to think I used to have a glass today! Well Crystal Light has come out with an Orange Juice Alternative. I haven't tried it but I will be picking some up and I figure if I take a small orange and squeeze it in there (fresh is always better) - I might have found me a winner.

So as always if anyone else has discovered anything else, pass it on.

...if you can get a juicer, get one! you can create all types of juices minuse the high fructose corn syrups and sweetners...i generally use carrots, celery, SOMETIMES a beet, peaches, watermelon, and pineapple...i mix it up and do various combinations, and when i'm REALLY feelin it, i add a little protein powder and have a meal substitute...check it out...

thanks I'm really not a juice type of person but in the summer I do make smoothies with yogurt and what not. When I go home my Mom who is the juicer queen forces me to drink some deep shit, lol

Bad Bad Pam but I haven't been 'testing' like I should. I am going to fill my prescription and start back pricking myself. I have to in order to see what my new choices are doing to me.

I want to test what my sugars are with store bought bread and with the wheat bread I've been making in the bread machine.

I eat wheat pasta. It contains the good carbs that our bodies need.

I didn't know Muellers had the low carb out. I may check it out, maybe not.

When you're diabetic it's not necessarily sometimes about good carbs etc. sometimes that stuff damn near puts you in a coma, lol

I am borderline diabetic and that's what my doc recommended in order to keep me from crossing over.

I eat wheat pasta, wheat bread, and brown rice.

I don't eat any white foods. Potatoes, rice, bread, sugar, etc.

We need carbs to live. When I tried cutting them out...I spent a week in the hospital.

Low carb, can still be high in sugar and fructose and other things a diabetic should not have.

SwtJ, try cooking the brown rice in water seasoned with a buillion cube. beef or chicken, whichever you prefer.

I like the taste of it, but that's what I do to it to get my son to eat it.

Actually it's good for anyone else who has these same concerns.

Diabetes is a silent killer in the black community and anything that can help anyone is valued information.

I thought that's what this thread was about? Sharing information?

And so I said Good...and the problem is? You said what works in your instance and I said some of it damn near kills me. I've had Diabetes for several years now and what I have learned is that it is an individual disease, so you're correct, the thread is about passing on information.

I didn't know wheat pasta could kill anyone.

I didn't post to argue with you Pam over what's good for you or not.

If wheat pasta will kill you then don't eat it. The last thing I'd want is for you to die.

I just felt it was a good suggestion for anyone else who may be watching their carbs.

But I should have known better...

Moving on.

And why is that?

Why is it that we can't have a civil posting between us?

If you wanna deal with that PM me.

It's not so much about carbs, but about the speed in which the carbs are digested. Wheat flour, if overcooked, will break down just as fast as white flour. The speed of this causes your blood-sugar levels to rise quickly causing an insulin spike.

What you want to do is cook all these things al dente (especially pasta). Brown rice is usually firmer than white, so it naturally breaks down slower in the body.
