May I be the 1st to admit we all have our prejudices....

But damn...in the new milleniuim (sp) in the tech world??? WTF...

here goes....

Our director of engineering ....added a new program to help us filter our spam...ok...good...thanks....

all junk mail goes to a junk mail box...ok...good.... , we have the option to open the mail...and weed thru it....

if there's something we want or need or is from a trusted source...it can be added to the..."WHITE LIST"

ya'll know what's next.....

if it's not identifable, or from a non-trusted source..or garabage it's..."BLACK LISTED".......

now he made this announcement in a all-employee staff meeting...here, sits Chey...a fly in buttermilk (you could hear a pin drop)....wondering...he could have used any other term....hell!!!....Green = good, go, ok....Red = stop, bad, whatever....

But black and white.......Ok, Techies...help me out...is this the term used for such..do programs actually come with white listed and black listed......

Ya'll know I have to pull him to the side, but I'd trully like to hear from all you techhie gurus....

It may not be a big deal for some....but I personally think it is soooooooooooooo...poltically incorrect....

HELP!!!...

:blah: :beating :hammer

You know..I kinda cringe when I hear stuff like that...but that is because of my early "color programming".

Black list has been used for a long time to define a list of "things" that are not wanted/allowed. I don't know much about the "white list".

But I would not sweat it. We know that if it was to me, I would have proably called it the:

"Yes List" and the "No List".
"Spam list" and the "legit list"
"Allow list" and the "Deny list"

So we have to fight our programming...cringe...and move on. :D

The old Star Trek line comes to mind: "Resistence is futile!" I may sound like the old Negro of the board, but in fact, what I'd like is to have you save your racial sidebars for when you need to combat the big stuff. With the "black list" term being common, I think its unlikely he meant anything by saying "white list", but then, only you know him. You said you could hear a pin drop. I take it that means you believe most caught that the black-white thing was "questionable terminology"? Or, perhaps, were they thinking " uh oh, Chey won't like this"? There is some condescension involved in being overly PC vigilant on many White's part, feeling that we are so thin-skinned that they should be especially careful, as one would with language when children are present, or we'll throw a tantrum at the drop of a hat.

On your boss' part, again, I'm guessing, it may be the cluelessness that most Whites have about what references to color may be construed as. That luxury of being able to be blissfully ignorant is the biggest proof that there is a common "white priveledge" that many Caucasians have in their mindset, and it's a default programming.... its what makes them "them". We can strive to make them aware when they slipup, even if it's genuinely coincidental in nature or intent. You just don't want to be regarded as Chicken Little.

Like Chris Rock said one time, (although he meant it about men being liars...), I think the joke applies here: He said "...It's like playing basketball with a retarded person, and calling them for double dribbling... ya just gotta let some shit slide!". If you get tagged as being touchy about every little faux-paux, when the big deal happens, you get the eye rolls and the "here we go again" reactions.

But you know that, and only you know best... thanks for sharing a snippet of "Chey's World"

He's a older Japenese dude...and he's been tagged as the company's best....through out the corporation nation wide.....Personally I try not to deal with him...but I've witnessed a few racial slurs that he's made......and have really cringed...he fired the only AA tech we had a year back...and the young man was good...at his job...since then 2 other techs have left for they have trouble working with him....

But yet this Mormon owned company...think he's God's gift to technology. i will hold my tongue for now.......But if everyone starts spouting out the black-list term through out the halls...I don't know how long I'll be silent.....

I just wanted to know if this is a legit term used in the technology biz.... :hammer

Chey, are you telling me that Al ain't there?

How is he the best when he can't keep employees?

I wonder of O.D.R. filed that complaint on him? How is he the best when your AA employee has always said he was racist? Skills ain't nothing if you don't have any proper moral or people training to execute them!

Clearly this guy appears to not be a likeable guy...and he may be a jerk. That may not necessarily make him a racist....so tread with care.

Black and White can mean many things..both positive and negative....and to make it complicated, it is also used to describe some races. A business can be "in the Black" on Monday while the stock market is suffering from "Black Monday"...at the same time. So I am not sure that "black list" and "white list" is an offical technical term but it is acceptable...although not totally "politically correct". And I understand that we may be sensitive to the word "black" used in a negative way. Combine that with the well justified dislike for him, and we may end up having enough "justification" to file a complaint...even if, in reality, there really isn't any justification.

As long as you are giving it much thought like you are now...hopefully you will make the right move.

Of course, sometimes if you complain, they will want to know what YOU did to help resolve the issue...like did YOU talk to him about your concerns before filing a complaint? Geesh! It's a political Jungle out there. Good luck!
