i can't find the thread... but...

our market manager wants a digital camera... and apparently... we got $3k to spend on this one item... so... i'm tryna be miss penny pincher and find the best camera at the best price

what can ya'll recommend?

it seems like the ones research thus far are questionable. some sony's ... one at the cost of $2k adn the other $1k... huh?

i have a feeling he wants the one with the 3.5 floppy disk (that was the distinguishing features of those selected of the sony's).

in the mean time, i'll consult my consumer report books...

Hula, you sound like you think 3K isn't much! That's a hell of a lot!

I got my little fuji for $200 with an extra memory card thrown in. But its a snapshot type camera. But if you are talking "best", they can get up there in price, but with a lot of stuff you don't need.

At wife' s job, I had a chance to play with the Sony "Mavica" model that has the option of saving each shot either to a memory chip, or direct to the 3.5 inch floppy that can be inserted in the camera body. Even still that was only about 4 bills and change. For 3K, you can buy at least 6 of those bad boys! There are a few stores that totally flaunt the discounters and sell shit at an outrageously high list prices! In Hackensack NJ, there's a store called "Gene Hackers", calling them themselves a pro photo shop. How they stay in business is beyond me. I ran out of there so fast.... they must be nuts!

You probably know this, so excuse me if I sound like I'm lecturing you, but have you seen that the thing is about that Sony Mavica floppy model is that it only fits gets a few pics on each 1.44mb floppy, so it's best for an occasional shot or two around the office, or you'll have to have a gang of floppies on hand. But you can't beat being able to take that floppy and put it directly into any PC's "A" drive, without those computers needing any proprietary software or going through a download from camera step. Most computers are going to have some kind of imaging software anyway, even if only the Paint program.

The Mavica's with the CD instead of the floppy can hold more shots, but the user would also need to have a bit more technical savvy to use it. If this camera would be used by various office coworkers, you'd want to stay simple. Because of needing to fit a floppy in the body, the camera is bulkier. To me, that's a good thing. We seem to be hooked these days on the status of technology's advances making everthing smaller and smaller until all these damn cel phones and camera's are so small, they are easily droppable. The floppy model Mavica I saw had a comfortable hand grip on the side that I could hold well. It eats through the battery, as many camera's do ( it helps battery longevity to keep the flash feature off, unless you really need it.). If you are going mobile, spare batteries are as essential as air. I am not a Ni-Cad rechargeable battery fan, but I have not tried them for many years, since post-college days. This newer technology might make them last longer between charges, but the reason I stopped was there is still the maintenence of keeping them around after each use and having to take time to recharge, so you need a spare set any way if you want to continue shooting while the first set recharges. If you are on the run, you have to have a wall outlet nearby. Fuck it! There are higher end disposables that hold up longer, and my camera only needs two at a time. It all depends on how much you plan to shoot. Specifically, how long the camera is on in standby, especially with the flash on. That's why many of the cameras do an auto shutdown within a minute of idleness.

actually....

your manage seems to want a high end...high megapixel...PROFESSIONAL....camera...

which will probably cost around $2400.

andre... i read all t hat and STILL didn't find your recommendation for 'the best' with consideration with everything you said. can you drop me a model name please? lol

i'm not saying 3k isn't a lot of money. personally, it's too much money. and i feel $700 for that thing Rock was talking about in another thread is pretty damn nice considering we got the money to spend.

at any rate, i don't think spending $2k for a floppy that works on equal level as a $200 camera is good business sense. why they allow the 'assitants' to do the shopping, i don't know. questions like these are for the engineering department who know about all this stuff.

at any rate, i seen the need, and the research the other asst did figured she had to be dumb enough to just spin the bottle and pick anything out JUST to spend the money with no consideration to its functionality. someone messed up and hired me for this job because i have to be money concious in one area of the business and to let this one slip by me was rather silly. i just seen the market manager yesterday. why i didn't pull his coat tail on the frivolous spending, i dont know (ya'll know i have to watch myself sometimes. i forget who signs my paycheck)...

so i'll have to call him on monday, or rather, his asst, then again, when i think of it, i'll call him, cause his asst is a little out of the know to be his asst.... i'll call him and ask him did they make a buy yet. if not... to hold off til i get some better pricing and recommendation.

since we got the money... i want what we buy to have the following:

extra battery packs (as dre mentioned)

extra memory stick/disk/cd (whatever)

2 chargers (cause folks are rough on thangs)

a carrying case for all accessories and camera

3-6 year warranty... yeah, i know these things won't be worth anything in that length of time, however, i enjoy calling for free service to fix and replace parts for free and only having had paid a couple of hundred bucks; i believe in stretching the dollar til it's invisible

insurance - in case the damn thing gets lost or stolen (cause folks aint to bold to steal cases of paper here, so, you know they'll swipe that bad boy)

AND

the camera

i can buy all this stuff right?

if so, that is why i want the best camera for its money and still have enough of the 3k to buy all these accessories.

i get sick to my stomach when i seen companies spending money unnecessarily!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are absolutely right.

The most expensive camera cannot make a person a good photographer. :D

check out this link:

http://reviews.cnet.com/Digital_cameras/2001-6501_7-0.html

3000 bucks can get you a mighty nice camera. But a high price does not guarantee a great camera....sometimes when ya spend too much...with the way consumer electronics prices are dropping...you sometimes do not get a good deal...and then in 6 months the price falls by a few hundred bucks...

But...

DO NOT GET A CAMERA WITH A 3.5in floppy. Sony has excellent digital cameras and they have some cameras with a 3.5 in floppy, but 3.5 in floppies are

Get a good 5 megapixel camera that uses one of the memory card technologies...like Compact Flash or Secure Digital etc.

Buy a card reader (will cost way less than 50 bucks) which will allow you to take the card from the camera and immediately load it into your PC.

Make sure you have optical zoom.

Oh...and find out what your manager intends on using the camera for. This is important, because what a person THINKS he needs and what he really needs are two different things.

If he is a professional photographer and he needs to take pictures for the news paper etc, then a HIGH price camera may be worth it.

But if he just wants to take pictures of his pet hampster...then I am sure that a $3000 camera is a little bit of...uh...overkill. :D

Because I deal in web design I will show you what I would buy and where.....

Here is one....

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1067389197280&skuId=6179967&type=product&cmp=%20%20

Sony Cyber-shot 8.0-Megapixel Digital Camera

Model: DSC-F828

This one has a pretty good zoom and Sony is known for its great low lighting focus. It does not use a 3.5 disk, but you would probably want atleast a 128mb Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Microdrive, CompactFlash I/II up to 1.0GB, with the cash you have you should get a warranty and the 512 card.

I am going to get this one in the next month.....

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1061769822853&skuId=5992848&type=product

Canon EOS Digital Rebel 6.3-Megapixel Digital Camera

Model: Digital Rebel Kit

This one is SLR, that means it can change lenses just like the 35mm the professionals use. It is not hard to use, but when you put one them 300mm zoom lenses on it, you will be right up on the action. If you need different lenes, this would be the camera of choice. Again it uses compact flash card memory and I would buy atleast a 512mb card.

Now you will also need a SanDisk USB drive..... this makes transferring the pictures to the computer much easier.....

SanDisk ImageMate 8-in-1 USB 2.0 Card Reader

Model: SDDR-88-07

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1061127111091&skuId=5957921&type=product

that will make life easier for ya.

Why Best Buy well you can probably find some discount cupons if you search the internet for a code, fa real fa real. And you can purchase additional warranty. And they are local if you need to return, ya feel me.

Ok thats my 2 cents......
