Any of the top brands would be ok:
HP, Compaq, Dell, Gateway...
But feel free to compare shop and go with the best deal. Make sure you include SHIPPING AND HANDLING in your price.
HP's stuff can be found on Http://www.hpshopping.com
But if you wanna make sure that you will have a system that will last you a few years, make sure that you have...
At least a 40 Gigabyte Hard Drive (80GB would be better)
At least a 2 Gigahertz processor (2.5 or greater would be better)
At least 256 megabyte ram (512 MB ram would be better)
At least Windows XP Home edition (Most people will not take advantage of Win XP professional)
Get a pretty current graphics processor (Geforce is great, but I LOVE my ATI All in Wonder card...that also has a TV tuner)
Try to get at least a DVD/CDRW Combo drive
As for monitor...well, flat screens are HOT, but you may be able to get some great deals on the regular 17 inch monitors and save some money.
You can pick and choose how much or how little you want in your system and customize it based on how much you wanna pay....but make sure you have the minimum as stated above.
In the past, I saved some money buying refirbished pcs and closeout PCs. You can check out:HP's Outlet store (http://www.shopping.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpdirect/shopping/scripts/generic_store/generic_landing_view.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@20308475 37.1075718130@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdkadckikekeedcfngcfkmdflldfjk.0&landing=outlet_store)

hey lovely,
here is a solid computer for your needs. this is a 2.4ghz celeron. if you really want a pentium 4 they usually pop up every couple of weeks but there are none currently available this cheap (sometimes they are, they were right after x-mas). after 125 in rebates the computer comes out to 374. OH! make sure you add the 3.5 flopy drive because this computer does not come with one in it's original configuration. that will bring the price to 394 after rebates. shipping is free and is usually around 3 days. read the instructions below (you must follow them to the letter) and then try this link:
