Its funny how I assumed everybody else had heard of gogo. I went to Club 112 last February and asked the DJ to play any gogo and he was like You must be from the DC area. We have southern rap down here, no gogo. I was like WHAT:eek:

WPGC's Huggy gets me my morning laugh every day.

What is go go?

remember that song, 'doing the butt,' that was by a DC go-go group called EU (experience unlimited)...the song 'sardines and pork-n-beans-junk yard band (also in RunDMC tougher than leather movie)...go-go.

god-father of go-go is a brother named chuck brown. he had a big song in the 70's called 'bustin' loose.'

it's characterized by a congo/bongo beat called 'pocket' which is basically the foundation, like samba and polka and scat have their base beats.

some big rap songs, especially ones out of NY have had serious go-go beats...beastie boys, rundmc, jay-z, salt-n-pepa. cee-lo and jill scott (philly ain't but a spit from DC) have the latest go-go samplings going on.

For the record...I'm str8 outta Jerzee but even I know about Mambo sauce. Lived in Silver Spring MD for a few years and a brotha would go str8 from DC LIVE or Republic Gardens to the all night gang bangs (chineese stoe) and get 5 wings, fried hard w/ fries and......MAMBO SAUCE!!! :D A cheap meal for a drunk brotha.

NOW, did you say Go-Go???? Ahhhhhhhhhhh Shit!!!!:hammer
Yes, Chuck Brown is the godfather of it all. You say sumthin bad about him in DC, be ready to fight yo way back to B- more.

doing the butt is the best example you can give?

those others aren't immediately familiar...

i need to be schooled on this. i thought go go was something other than what you describe. i first heard about it 2 years ago... and still 'don't get it'; someone send me a cd/tape full of authentic go go music (no sampling) so i can get the jist of this please!!!!!!!!!!!!

next time i go home, i gotta get some tapes for myself (yes, tapes...a good go-go tape can go for $25 easy).

the butt is the most recognized across the country since spike did the video. the key is the beat. a lot of covering and sampling in go-go. actually jay-z, when he did 'at the club' said he didn't care if it looked like he was the biting the three in moring joint (good call sinbad!) because he said go-go been biting his shyt for years.

he's right, but it's not necessarily the lyrical content, it's the beat. just like MIA and uncle luke makes you shake that ass, that congo in go-go makes you...get that headnod and slow side shimmy working.

other examples...maze fea. frankie beverly 'before i let go.' that breakdown near the end...boook dook kadook...go-go.

hmmm, what is the beastie boy song when they say 'there it is' and then there's the drum roll...that beat is go-go.

that new cee-lo is straight go-go. the first two verses got that go-go rap flow as well. elementary and rudimentary but so fucking addictive.

hula (and admin...ahem) there's a documentary called go-go live that came out ten maybe fifteen years ago. that chronicles the movement. also, vibe or source magazine did a story on it two years ago. they followed the junkyard band. OG's in go-go.

tried to find the article, but i can't. here's a link (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dcarea/message/27) though to this dude in '99 talking about it on a yahoo board. i chose it because you'll notice it's a lot of covering other folks shyt...but the that pocket is the key.

if it wasn't a '99 college mail address, i would e-mail this bama (DC headz know that this ain't a negative connotation of the word...) and ask for copies of the tapes.

yes, it's that serious.

plus that nukka said, 'the buns were going crazy.' jo, i miss that dc slang!

:( i never got to party at the IBEX. oh, yeah, it's the second and third post. not the joint about pregnancy.

I Have Had Enough
I HAVE BEEN IN THE DC AREA FOR AWHILE AND I STILL CAN'T GET INTO THAT GO-GO. It's too repitious for me. I was also in Club 112 in February and thank the lord they didn't play any GO-GO. lol.

HUGGY LOW DOWN IS THE MAN THOUGH.

WB, I've said the exact same words years ago when I first moved to the DC area. My first encounter with Go-Go was in college in 85 and I talked so much shit about it but after awhile that Go Go beat just grabbed my ass and I was hooked.

got a 2001 chuck brown joint. and a CRANKIN' ASS '98 rare essence blickum.

for the uninitiated: chuck, as stated is the godfather, his style is more r&b/jazz. essence is more shake that ass (what uncle luke is to FL and lil john is to ATL).

james funk is on the chuck joint. i almost nutted when i heard him. funk on a tape is like that special guest star at your favorite artist's concert.

I am very interested! Although after my post, I ran up on a go go MSN group and downloaded their selections and am listening to them now.

Thanks!
