I dont really care for priceline and hotwire as I always need to be able to pick & choose my times.
A lot of folks like priceline.
IF ya like bidding for your airfare u can check out the following:
www.goinggoinggone.com
amazon.com
bidwatch.com
you can also check yahoo auctions.
I'm partial to Orbitz & Expedia, I just booked flights for my cruise on Yahoo a few weeks ago.

Hey Sea, I love me some Orbitz and Expedia, however, there is a trip i need to take and because it's during thanksgiving, they are TOO damn pricey elsewhere. 30 days out and tickets are $400? NOT... I gotta take Anthony and me both... so i have to bid THIS ONE TIME (i hope it's one time).
Otherwise, i would have bought these tickets back in July.:p

I say skip both and go directly to the airline's website.
I'm checking fares for my upcoming trip to Sin City. For the helluv it, I checked Cheaptickets and Travelocity. They wanted 184 R/T. Went directly to America Wests website and the same ticket same dates, same time was 148.
I *do* think if you are booking a air+hotel package it may work out better through one of those sites... :)
Sorry to bump up such an old post... :p

In the past couple of years, I only dealt with Hot Wire, but now I think I will shop around more and compare.

Last year when i came to HUSHNIC, i checked online....then something said call the airline because i need to know things like how big the plane is, how many folks it seat.....(i still have some fear).......so i call the airline directly, the flight was $30 cheaper.......and the day of the flight.....i also got the pilot to sign my book.....

I typically don't do that bidding stuff and although due to travelling I have a lot of different frequent flier programs/membership, I tend to just keep the same preferred carrier which is DELTA.
However, before I purchase I check several sites for comparison pricing and then I'll go ahead and call the airlines because sometimes there is a difference. The reason being that not all fare programs are released or made available to all discount programs and/or if they are, they may have sold out however many "special rates & fares" that they were alloted.
I generally check Expedia or Travelocity and Yahoo Travel (which I thought primarily uses one of those search engines).
Another good one to check if you are trying to purchase right then is SIDESTEP (http://flights.sidestep.com/air/). This website simultaneous and constantly checks fare offers so you can literally sit there and keep getting updates if you have the time to keep refreshing it.
There's a bar that shows you the progress of the searches and there's a sidebar of the search summary with links to even break down the prices, times, etc. for you so you don't have to search through all the listings.
SIDESTEP shows you the flight times, number of layovers and airlines which is something that most of the bidding sites don't let you see before you purchase.
I would venture to say that for the best deals this would be the place to check.

I've heard so many good things about Sidestep. Tried to download it but I use Mozilla for a browser and it will only d-load on IE. Crap.
My preferred carrier is American, but they are getting real shitty on their flexibility and schedules. Delta would be second place but they have drasctically reduced flights out of D/FW.
I wish somebody like JetBlue or Independance would open up gates here. There's not enough competition out of D/FW.
I just may have to dload IE(I completely uninstalled it off my system, too much spyware and security vulnerabilities) for the purpose of Sidestep. I'm curious now.

You don't have to download the toolbar which is what I think it used to "make" you do. You had to download a companion, I think. But the website operates by itself now maybe due to the reason you stated. I don't know.
